Let's Call Out CSI: Cyber’s Hilariously Absurd Technobabble. In only two short months, CSI: Cyber has quickly become one of the most magnificently absurd police procedurals being aired by a major television network.
To be fair, its problems are mostly a matter of circumstance: It’s actually just about as brain-dead as any other CSI series, but this go-round comes off especially bad since it was ostensibly designed specifically to follow technology-related fictional crimes. Your cyberpunk games are dangerous. On January 17, 1980, FBI agents descended on a small business in Wisconsin to investigate a plot against the life of an American business executive in Beirut, Lebanon, named William Weatherby.
The tip came to local law enforcement from a concerned citizen who had chanced on a written description of the conspiracy, which the police duly handed over to the FBI. When investigators arrived at the offices of this company, TSR Hobbies, they learned that William Weatherby did not exist: he was a non-player character in a new espionage role-playing game called Top Secret, which TSR was playtesting. This was easily demonstrated to the satisfaction of all parties, and the whole incident would certainly be forgotten today—except that it inevitably became part of TSR’s promotion for Top Secret. It was a spy game so realistic that even the FBI thought it was real. Actually, Egbert had run away to Louisiana for unrelated reasons, but a seed was then planted in the American popular imagination.
Game or Cult? The Alternate Reality of the Jejune Institute. Cults rarely end on a high note: They hinge on anticipation, rather than results.
Either they implode amid schisms and in-fighting, or they fail to deliver a promised apocalypse. The Jejune Institute might have gone the same way. And if you’re a gamer, Gamestop dumpsters can be a gold mine. Video games, working controllers, strategy guides, store displays: all can be found strewn among the debris, ready to be snatched up by anybody willing to dive into a (moderately dirty) refuse bin. But how do these gaming treasures end up in dumpsters to begin with? The answer is simple - if you’ve seen the inside of a Gamestop, you know that shelf real estate is an incredibly hot commodity. Stores are packed wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling with games and gaming accessories. Video courtesy of TKsJohnsFilms Gamestop’s 2012 Annual Report (released in March 2013), notes that the company runs a refurbishment center in Grapevine, TX that specializes in repairing games, consoles, and mobile devices. He knows everything that happens in his hood. He was there when MC Dedê blew up on Orkut with 10 different profiles; when the “fluxos,” the funk bloc parties, took over the brick-walled alleys; and more recently, when loló, Brazilian slang for an ether-based aerosol drug, started to take over the minds and lives of Cidade Tiradentes' youth. Never trust a corporation to do a library’s job — The Message. When this launched, there were dozens of confused comments from people wondering what old videogames has to do with Internet history.
In my mind, this stems from mistaken perception issues of the Internet Archive as solely an institution saving webpages. China's super-rich communist Buddhists. 28 January 2015Last updated at 20:35 ET By John Sudworth BBC News, Shanghai Could China be bringing Tibetan Buddhism in from the cold? There are new signs that while a crackdown on Tibetan nationalism continues, the atheist state may be softening its position towards the religion - and even the Dalai Lama. That a former senior Communist Party official would invite the BBC into his home might, to most foreign journalists in China, seem an unlikely prospect.

Grand Theft Auto 5, Australian culture, and how the American press misses the point. The decision to remove Grand Theft Auto 5 from the shelves of Target and K-Mart stores in Australia caused quite the reaction, especially in the American gaming press. The move was discussed, argued over and written about, but the act itself took place in Australia, and reflects Australian culture and history. It's worth keeping that context in mind as we discuss the situation. Australia has a national, government-funded body called the Classification Board that classifies films and video games.
The Grand Theft Auto series itself has a long history in Australia, and with that board in particular. O patrimônio da escravidão - Comentário para o programa radiofônico do Observatório, 27/11/2014. This May Be the Most Dangerous — and Most Costly — Photo In Japan. Hidetoshi Tanaka (left) with Shinobu Tsukasa, the head of the Yamaguchi-gumi, in 2005 The above picture may be worth more than $1 billion in Japan. At the very least, it's worth a severe beating by gangsters armed with baseball bats. In September, the right-wing scandal sheet Keiten Shimbun obtained the photo of Hidetoshi Tanaka (left), the chief director of Japan University and the vice chairman of Japan's Olympic Committee. Sitting next to Tanaka is Shinobu Tsukasa, the head of Japan's largest yakuza [organized crime] syndicate, the Yamaguchi-gumi.
(Note his left hand.) The photo, which police believe was taken in early 2005, was anonymously sent to several media outlets including Keiten Shimbun; one magazine received a note with the photos that read: "I am an employee of Japan University, where many are in conflict with chief director Tanaka. Japan's biggest organized crime syndicate now has its own website and theme song. “I am lonely, will anyone speak to me”: Inside the saddest thread on the internet, ten years later. This October, a guest user logged onto moviecodec.com — a technical Q&A forum for media file playback and conversion — to post a cry for help on one of the site’s off-topic forums. “[I']m so lonely,” wrote the user, “feeling sad please anyone talk to me.” It was an almost word-for-word replica of the thread’s title, written 10 years and thousands of posts earlier: “i am lonely will anyone speak to me.” The thread’s creator was also a guest, who logged in as “lonely” in 2004. A decade ago, due to the freakishly searchable title and the fact that the site was already optimized for maximum Google search exposure, the thread went viral.
