Cool URIs for the Semantic Web In an earlier post, I discussed the URI patterns we are using for the URIs of “things” described in our data (archival resources, concepts, people, places, and so on). One of the core requirements for exposing our RDF data as Linked Data is that, given one of these URIs, a user/consumer of that URI can use the HTTP protocol to “look up” that URI and obtain a description of the thing identified by that URI.

Our Linked Data work has thrown up a significant number of challenges around the consistency and structure of the source data from the Archives Hub, and nowhere more so than around identifiers for the archival resources, that is, the references used for the archives at all levels of description, be it collection, series, file or item.

Identifiers on the Hub Identifiers serve two distinct purposes on the Archives Hub: (i) the identifier for the archive itself – the reference for the actual collection or sub-collection. This is contained within the ‘unitid’ tag. (ii) the identifier for the description of that archive – the finding aid. The Music Ontology. Finto. About Finto is a Finnish service for the publication and utilization of vocabularies, ontologies and classifications. It provides a user interface for browsing the vocabularies and open interfaces for utilizing them in other applications.

Finto is being developed as a joint project between the National Library of Finland, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Education and Culture. In our vision, a conceptual semantic infrastructure is needed for the semantic web in the same way as roads are needed for traffic and transportation, power plants and electrical networks are needed for energy supply, or GSM standards and networks are needed for mobile phones and wireless communication.

A solid, commonly agreed open infrastructure would make it much easier and cheaper for public organizations and companies to create interoperable intelligent contents and services on the coming semantic web.
