How is it that a squirrel reaching for a walnut can summon the Sistine Chapel? That a rubber duck can sit in for one of the most famous girls in art history, and be recognised by its pearl earring? Two hands and a mouth is The Scream. This portrayal of an Iowan farmer and his daughter (actually posed by Grant Wood’s sister and his dentist) is surely among the world’s most referenced art works, captivating viewers since Wood painted it in 1930.

Since making its grand debut in Victorian London, the international spectacle has celebrated the achievements of countries across the globe, including industrial inventions, scientific advancements, and cultural contributions. From the beautiful Eiffel Tower to a beloved ride at Disneyland, many attractions from some of the most significant world's fairs remain prevalent and popular today. Before we explore these expositions, however, let's take a look at how the world's fair came to be. History Inspired by a string of national exhibitions in 18th and 19th-century Britain, London hosted the first world's fair, The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, in 1851.

About the Campaign: Mayor Bill de Blasio and the NYC Commission on Human Rights launched this citywide anti-discrimination campaign to affirm New Yorker's right to live, work, and pray free from discrimination and harassment. The campaign, which includes ads, PSA videos, and community events, follows a 60 percent increase in reports of discrimination to the NYC Commission on Human Rights in 2016, a trend that continues into 2017. With reports of discrimination on the rise in New York City, Mayor de Blasio's office and the NYC Commission on Human Rights have teamed up to launch a campaign to encourage more inclusiveness in the city.

The campaign includes PSA videos (like the one above), community events and ads placed on LinkNYC kiosks, subway and bus shelters, local businesses and media outlets. The initiative follows a 60 percent increase in reports of discrimination to the Commission in 2016, and a 30 percent increase in complaints so far this year. The Commission reports that it currently has 1,600 open discrimination cases, compared to 1,200 in May of 2016. “There’s no place for hate or bias in our city,” said City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito in a statement. “At a time where bias incidents are rising at alarming rates across our nation, this campaign reminds us that all New Yorkers have a right to feel safe and secure. "
