Conference in 2012 In 2012, from 16 th –20 th August, Tolkien societies from around the world are collborating to organise The Return of the Ring , a Tolkien conference at Loughborough University. There will be several academic streams, plus at least one non-academic stream, family friendly items, and an informal fandom stream. Planned major events include a ceilidh, a banquet, and a masquerade.

Martin Freeman has left The Hobbit . This is not another April Fool , just a May Fact. Before signing as Bilbo, Martin had agreed to make three 90-minute TV films in London, again playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes . No worries: he'll be back in Middle Earth after our first hiatus, during which Peter Jackson will have spare time to edit the scenes already completed. The rest of the cast remains on duty for another few weeks, working on hobbit-less sections of the film.

The folks over at Super Power Beat Down are obviously trying to tick off Tolkien fans. In the recent match-up of ‘Darth Vader vs. Gandalf,’ they’ve managed to make an amazing technical presentation of a battle between these two pop culture icons (well worth the watch!) , but failed when it came down to making an educated decision on who could actually win a battle between the two. Ultimately if the competition comes down to a vote of the pop culture masses, we can always count on the slavish drones of Lucasites feverishly voting for anything that has the moniker of ‘Star Wars.’
