Christopher Ryan: True nature of our sexuality silenced by religious authorities, society For 95 percent of our evolution, men and women shared partners, children, Ryan says Ryan: Advent of agriculture brought idea of private property, women as possessions Nonpossessive sexuality is natural, but we can opt to be monogamous, he writes Editor's note: Christopher Ryan is a psychologist, teacher and the co-author, along with Cacilda Jethá, of " Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality ," published by Harper Collins. (CNN) -- Seismic cultural shifts about 10,000 years ago rendered the true story of human sexuality so subversive and threatening that for centuries, it has been silenced by religious authorities, pathologized by physicians, studiously ignored by scientists and covered up by moralizing therapists. In recent decades, the debate over human sexual evolution has entertained only two options: Humans evolved to be either monogamists or polygamists.
In the summer movie Love Ranch , 65-year-old actress Helen Mirren portrays an aging madam who heats up the screen in a sex scene. To promote the film, Mirren posed topless for New York magazine, which elicited a gaggle of fawning comments online. “Foxy,” praised readers. “She puts the sex in sexagenarian,” crowed one.
Then, one day in December 2003, at a sleazy motor inn on the Berlin Turnpike—an 11.2-mile time-warp stretch of asphalt, lined on either side with at least 37 other no-tell motels—Paris remitted Forbes $1,200, and the girls, court documents show, were his. Buying girls like livestock is not unusual. Cheryl, a gems girl, at about 14 was sold by one pimp, “Love,” to another pimp, “Junior,” for $600. The New York City Police detective Wayne Taylor—convicted in July 2008 for the attempted kidnapping of a 13-year-old—purchased his thrall for $500 from a Brooklyn “pimp partner.” In fact, the price for an adolescent female slave is far lower than it was in the mid–19th century, when, adjusted to today’s dollar, the going rate was roughly $40,000, the price of a car. Well, this is upsetting. According to a new study, people can't tell the difference between quotes from British "lad mags" and interviews with convicted rapists. And given the choice, men are actually more likely to agree with the rapists. The University of Surrey reports on the study (conducted jointly with researchers at Middlesex University), to be published in the British Journal of Psychology . Researchers gave a group of men and women quotes from the British lad mags FHM , Loaded , Nuts and Zoo , as well as excerpts from interviews with actual convicted rapists originally published in the book The Rapist Files .
So I’ve been thinking about periods – and no, not the punctuation kind. That’s because I spent some time on the weekend thumbing my way through an interesting little book on menstruation. Called ‘ Capitalizing on the Curse: The Business of Menstruation ’, the book explores the impact that capitalist forces have had on our monthly periods. It’s by Elizabeth Arveda Kissling , a professor at Eastern Washington University. I know, I know – I can hear you now: “this is a blog about pubic hair — why the period talk?”

Aaron Vincent Elkaim / AP Terri-Jean Bedford, center, makes a victory sign during a press conference in Toronto on Monday, March 26, 2012 with Nikki Thomas, left, and Valerie Scott, right, after the Ontario's Court of Appeal struck down a ban on brothels, saying a ban on brothels puts prostitutes at risk and is unconstitutional. Bedford, a dominatrix, has argued that Canada's sex trade laws force workers from the safety of their homes to face violence on the streets. By msnbc.com staff

Antiquity: Ancient Egyptian women use a combination of cotton, dates, honey and acacia as a suppository, and it turns out fermented acacia really does have a spermicidal effect. The Bible and the Koran both refer to coitus interruptus (the withdrawal method). 1914-1921 Activist Margaret Sanger coins the term “birth control,” opens first birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and starts the American Birth Control League, the precursor to Planned Parenthood. 1934 Endocrinologist Gregory Pincus creates a test tube rabbit — and is vilified as a Frankenstein.
The resolution to the contraception contretemps seems mainly designed to do one thing: mollify the Catholics who defied the U.S. Conference of Bishops to support the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Church leaders are unlikely to officially back this so-called accommodation – the White House isn’t calling it a compromise — just as they continued to oppose the ACA even after President Obama did everything imaginable to insist the new law wouldn’t provide federal funding for abortion. But the new agreement makes it possible for women’s groups and some liberal Catholic leaders to maintain a truce on hot-button social issues while working together around issues of women’s health and universal access to healthcare. Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America are happy with the solution, and so is Sister Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association, who endured withering heat from the bishops and their right-wing allies over the ACA.

Some of these developments are exciting and challenging, but in one particular sense the internet poses a fundamental challenge to the way humans interact.
Abstinence-Only Education teaches abstinence as the only morally correct option of sexual expression for teenagers. It usually censors information about contraception and condoms for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unintended pregnancy. Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Education teaches abstinence as the only morally correct option of sexual expression for unmarried young people. Programs funded under the 1996 Welfare Reform Act must censor information about contraception and condoms for the prevention of STDs and unintended pregnancy. Abstinence-Centered Education— Another term normally used to mean abstinence-only education. Comprehensive Sex Education teaches about abstinence as the best method for avoiding STDs and unintended pregnancy, but also teaches about condoms and contraception to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and of infection with STDs, including HIV.
Gays are represented in every profession except professional sports and if an athlete comes out it is only after his career is over, a panel discussion at the University of Toronto heard on Friday. That is where G-Force hockey - an all-star gay American hockey team - comes in to set an example and break down negative stereotypes about gay athletes. "I believe in what we are trying to do," said Keith Miller, a defenceman on the team which is in Toronto for a tournament against other gay and straight teams. "Our message is young kids in sport can come out and not have to worry. We want to change attitudes and help young players come out."
Most masturbation is safe and healthy, sex therapists say. And it can improve sexual function and relationships by teaching both men and women about their own sexual responses, so they’re better able to explain to their partner what feels good to them. However, people who become too obsessed with solo sex can develop sexual problems or lose interest in sex with their partners. Finally, masturbation can, in fact, cause injury; frequent or overly vigorous masturbation can irritate the skin of the penis, and men who masturbate face-down can injure their urethras.
