Advancing Portable Documents for the Open Web Platform: EPUB-WEB

In this vision, the current format- and workflow-level separation between offline/portable (EPUB) and online (Web) document publishing is diminished to zero. These are merely two dynamic manifestations of the same publication: content authored with online use as the primary mode can easily be saved by the user for offline reading in portable document form. Content authored primarily for use as a portable document can be put online, without any need for refactoring the content. Publishers can choose to utilize either or both of these publishing modes, and users can choose either or both of these consumption modes. A portable document is a collection of content items (e.g. pages, chapters, modules, articles) structured as a single, self-contained logical unit. Several portable document formats exist. About the epub mantra — On Publishing

And we librarians love formats. Many librarians have embraced the semantic web and are truly very knowledgeable about metadata and formats. On my box of Semantic-Web’Os it says “contains ontologies and taxonomies”, so of course, librarians are into it… while still working daily with formats dating back to the 1960s and Henriette Avram. But maybe precisely because librarians are stuck with antiquated formats, it rings alarm bells for me when I hear anyone insisting that format XYZ is the only future for us.

I distrust formats. I’ve met a number of French publishers lately and talked about formats with them. All the publishers I have met repeat it again and again like a mantra: epub. Epub, they say, is open. Because nobody knows how to sell content on the web, and before we put our content anywhere, we need to be pretty sure we know how to sell itBecause the idea of a book needs to be encapsulated, “realized” in an actual book format. iBooks : questions et réponses sur iBooks et l’iBookstore. EPUB

EPUB is the distribution and interchange format standard for digital publications and documents based on Web Standards. EPUB defines a means of representing, packaging and encoding structured and semantically enhanced Web content — including XHTML, CSS, SVG, images, and other resources — for distribution in a single-file format. EPUB allows publishers to produce and send a single digital publication file through distribution and offers consumers interoperability between software/hardware for unencrypted reflowable digital books and other publications. EPUB. EPUB (short for electronic publication; sometimes styled ePub) is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).

EPUB

Files have the extension .epub. EPUB is designed for reflowable content, meaning that an EPUB reader can optimize text for a particular display device. EPUB also supports fixed-layout content. The format is intended as a single format that publishers and conversion houses can use in-house, as well as for distribution and sale. It supersedes the Open eBook standard.[2] History[edit] EPUB became an official standard of the IDPF in September 2007, superseding the older Open eBook standard.[3] In August 2009, the IDPF announced that they would begin work on maintenance tasks of the EPUB standard.[4] Two broad objectives were defined by this working group: "One set of activities governs maintenance of the current EPUB Standards (i.e. EPUB (format) Un article de Wikipédia, l'encyclopédie libre.
