Divergent by Veronica Roth. Books In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are.

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga. “Lyga has fashioned the kind of gripping, gory psycho-thriller usually relegated to adult fiction, one that fears neither viscera nor deviant sexual behavior nor the darkest of human impulses.” — Booklist It was a beautiful day.

-Booklist, starred review “Luminous.” -Entertainment Weekly “A smartly crafted intellectual explosion of a romance.” A blend of melancholy, sweet, philosophical, and funny. “One doesn’t like to throw around phrases like “instant classic” lightly, but I can see The Fault in Our Stars taking its place alongside Are You There God? “Green writes books for young adults, but his voice is so compulsively readable that it defies categorization. “A pitch-perfect, elegiac comedy…it will linger long and hard in the minds of teens and former teens.” The Movie Rights. Purple Heart by Patricia McCormick. The Inspiration for Purple Heart A few years ago, I had the privilege of working on an unusual peace demonstration—one that united Vietnam veterans with recent veterans from the war in Iraq and old-fashioned peaceniks. These unlikely groups were brought together by the Quaker organization American Friends Service Committee. As a group, we arranged more than 3,600 pairs of combat boots, each one tagged with the name of a soldier who’d died in Iraq or Afghanistan, in a display that was meant to symbolize the real human cost of the war.

Nearby, we laid out a pile of civilian shoes to symbolize the uncounted men, women, and children who’d died in Iraq. One pair of shoes caught my eye. It was a pair of sneakers, just the right size for a ten-year-old boy. I instantly saw that boy being shot in the chest, his small body flung into the air from the force of the blast. It’s estimated that more than 1.3 million civilians have died in Iraq. More interviews can be found here: Democratic Tribune. Everybody Sees the Ants by AS King. Hate List by Jennifer Brown. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Chapter Teaser You can also listen to Chapter One of the audiobook on YouTube. The screw through cinder’s ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle. Her knuckles ached from forcing the screwdriver into the joint as she struggled to loosen the screw one gritting twist after another. By the time it was extracted far enough for her to wrench free with her prosthetic steel hand, the hairline threads had been stripped clean. Tossing the screwdriver onto the table, Cinder gripped her heel and yanked the foot from its socket. A spark singed her fingertips and she jerked away, leaving the foot to dangle from a tangle of red and yellow wires. She slumped back with a relieved groan. Cinder was the only full- service mechanic at New Beijing’s weekly market. A stained tablecloth divided Cinder from browsers as they shuffled past. Cinder’s auditory interface dulled the noise into a static thrumming, but today one melody lingered above the rest that she couldn’t drown out.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. THE NIGHT CIRCUS is my debut novel, available in paperback in July from Vintage in the US, Harvill Secker in the UK & a great many other lovely publishers around the world. The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead. “Magical. “Around and Around (and Around)” A Magical New Scene from The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Room by Emma Donoghue. Room Room(London: Picador; Toronto: HarperCollins Canada; New York: Little Brown, 2010), my Man-Booker-shortlisted seventh novel, is the story of a five-year-old called Jack, who lives in a single room with his Ma and has never been outside. When he turns five, he starts to ask questions, and his mother reveals to him that there is a world beyond the walls. Told entirely in Jack’s voice, Room is no horror story or tearjerker, but a celebration of resilience and the love between parent and child. An international bestseller as soon as it was published in August 2010, Room has now sold well over a million copies.

It won the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize (for best Canadian novel), the Commonwealth Prize (Canada & Carribbean Region), the Canadian Booksellers’ Association Libris Awards (Fiction Book and Author of the Year), the Forest of Reading Evergreen Award, the W.
