Coaching Basketball Defensive 3 on 4 Contest Drill - This post contains videos of two defensive drills. The first is with Tad Boyle of Colorado and the second is with Steve Prohm, Iowa State, who was at Murray State when the video was made. Make sure your sound is on as you watch. All videos are You Tube videos. Make sure that you are on a server that allows You Tube access. Tad Boyle Colorado 3 on 4 Contest Drill This first video is with Tad Boyle, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Colorado. Use the drill to improve communication, ball pressure, active hands for deflections, and closing out at full speed. Basketball Drills Sean Miller Beating Pressure - Size Disadvantage Finishing Moves - Slide Away Basketball Finishing Drill - This driving and finishing drill is among the thousands of resources for both coaches and player available from basketballhq. They have several more videos as well as basketball coaching resource articles. Make sure that your speakers are on to hear the narration and that you can access You Tube to see the videos. The Coach in the video is Brian Baudinet, formerly an assistant coach with the NBA D-League Tulsa 66ers.

Since the video was made, Coach Baudinet has taken a position with the Duquense University Men’s Staff and the Tulsa 66ers are now known as the Oklahoma City Blue. The purpose of this post is to get you to think about adapting it to your needs and not just running the drill as is. I like the idea of giving consideration to where your players will be spaced and where the help is likely to come from as you work on your straight line driving and finishing at the basket. Archie Miller Scoring Drills - I found these scoring drills from Archie Miller (Indiana University Head Coach, formerly University of Dayton) on his outstanding site with posts on various coaching topics at www.pickandpop.net Some of these drills were set up to be used during improvement season workouts, but I hope you can find ways to use them in your practices too.

Diagrams created with FastDraw “Sideline Touches” Player passes the ball to the coach, sprints to half court and then back to the basket where he receives a pass from the coach for his finish • Will do same finishes every day (2 reps of each finish on each side of the floor) . • Finishes: 1. -Using the pad is important because you need to get your players to not pick up their dribble when they meet contact. -I want all my players to do the same skill work. -We are a “dominant pivot foot” program. “Explosion Series” • Finishes: 1. -Ball-handling work is useless unless the player is tired when he does it. “Circle Scoring” • Finishes: 1. “Full Court Finishes” Leadership Personas - Cory Dobbs, Ed.D.

Founder, The Academy for Sport Leadership Leadership Personas: The Power of Identity to Get Student-Athletes to Think and Act Like a Leader When Steven Brown was asked if he could be a team leader he wasn’t quite sure how to respond. You see, Steven wasn’t sure he was a leader. Most of his life revolved around simply following the dictates of his coaches (teachers and parents too). Like most student‐athletes Steven had a very narrow definition of what leadership entailed. However, it neglects the fostering of a broad‐based progression of desired competencies. Of course, if someone is careful enough to make such a bold assertion, I hope they respond in kind with a way to solve the, in this case, obscure problem. You see, leadership development is found in this simple formula: Mindset + Skill Set + Actions ( situational) = output (quantitative results) and outcomes (qualitative results) The mindset is the cognitive and emotional center of every student‐athlete.

How to Spot a Winning Team Culture - Life Beyond Sport. Culture of mediocrity of getting in the way of athletic success at DCHS | The Glendive Ranger Review. (Editor’s note: When replying to questions from our sports reporter about recent basketball games, Coach Wade Murphy was prompted to write about why he feels Dawson County High School athletics programs often come up short. Murphy asked that if his comments were shared, they were shared in their entirety.)

The bottom line is that these games (against Billings Central and Laurel) were not won this weekend. They were won in the off-season. Laurel’s kids have obviously spent a lot of time in the gym and the weight room. They are extremely athletic from top to bottom. Their young kids look really good as well. People ask me all the time what the difference is between our kids and the kids from those schools. Summer after summer in my 11 years here I’ve watched the coaches in this school open the weightroom, the gym, and the fields. Believe it or not, these are basic time-honored excuses that exist in every school with athletic programs. Kids need a break from playing? When will it change? Basketball Coaching | Things Basketball Teams Do a Lot. This article is from University of Washington women’s head basketball coach Mike Neighbors and one of his October Newsletters. Coach Neighbors has an outstanding weekly newsletter.

If you are interested in subscribing, email me and I will pass along your interest and your email address to him. “Be good at the things you do a lot” from Coach Mike Neighbors While John Wooden’s record for NCAA Championships may never be broken, I believe the greatest coaching feat of my lifetime has been Pete Carril winning 500 games, earning 11 NCAA tourney berths WITHOUT a scholarship player!!! I can still remember watching the back-door cut his Princeton Tigers ran to beat the defending National Champions, UCLA, in 1996.

And while I am not nearly smart enough to teach the Princeton offense, I have studied almost every other aspect of this great coach and his career. Of all his great teaching points, the one that I have used the most is this: “Be good at the things you do a lot” 3) OBSERVE: Go to clinics. "Wild Card" Drills Create Winning Hand - Winning Hoops. By Marty Cosgrove, Athletic Director & Head Girls Basketball Coach, Sandwich High School, Sandwich, Mass. As coaches, we always encourage our players to work on developing their skills. Many states have restrictive out-of-season coaching parameters. Without supervision and feedback, off-season skill development erodes into games of 5-on-5 pickup basketball. “Wild Card Basketball” is a simple and effective way to get your players to work on skill development, communication, thinking skills and most importantly, team development.

We created a deck of cards incorporating skills we wanted emphasized in 5-on-5 full- and half-court games. Creation of Wild Card decks can be as simple as purchasing a package of lined index cards or as complicated as designing your own elaborate set of cards on your computer. . • “Sudden Victory. . ” “5-on-5 full-court game. The rationale behind this game is to get everybody involved with scoring. . • “Continuous. . ” “5-on-5 full-court game, played up to seven points. Basketball Drills Transition Skill Drills - Today’s post is more drills from a collection put together by Nate Hill, Assistant Boys Coach at Colonel Crawford High School in North Robinson Ohio.
