Linear Graphs

My bright Year 11s know the rule for finding the gradient of a perpendicular line, but can't work out how to answer a GCSE question like this: Strangely, I teach this differently at GCSE and A level. At GCSE my pupils write down y = mx + c and substitute values for y, m and x, then solve for c. Y - y1 = m(x - x1) Essentially the same method but a slightly different approach.

In this post I’ll suggest some ideas and resources for teaching linear graphs. Key words Let's start with the basics. Cake fractions / Activities / Fractions / Topdrawer / Home - Topdrawer. The learning object L2801 Fraction fiddle: matching cake fractions uses the context of filling customer orders in a cake shop, where partial cakes can be ordered.

Small teams of students could discuss and make each prediction, and take turns in carrying out the checking. During the checking stage, ask the students to explain what happens with the number of equal cake slices as the denominator is changed. 5 New Math Websites for Teachers. Improving Learning in Mathematics builds on existing successful practice and explores approaches that encourage a more active way of learning through the use of group work, discussion and open questioning. Writing in Mathematics

Teachers use the writing assignments to assess student understanding of important concepts, student proficiency in explaining and using those concepts and each student's attitude toward learning mathematics. Writing in mathematics is a win-win for both teacher and student. Although it may be difficult to introduce this practice, it is well worth the effort. Look for simple ways to incorporate short writings throughout daily lessons and longer writings over the course of weeks or math units.
