Famous People Supporting Occupy Wall Street. Occupy Wall Street, the anti-corporate greed protest that has taken over segments of New York’s financial district, has been gaining national attention in the last month. It has also been gaining celebrity support. While there has been much internet analysis about the social, political, and methodological aspects of this demonstration, we’re going to ignore issues like the growing gap between the rich and the poor and the devastating effects it will have on our children to talk about CELEBRITIES.

Susan Sarandon, celebrity mascot of left-wing causes, spent a day at the protest, finding the demonstration incredibly moving. “I don’t know that much about Wall Street, but if I was running a business and I made that big of a mistake and lost that many people’s future, I don’t think I would get a bonus or even keep my job,” Sarandon told reporters. The "real America" that emerged in Madison, Wisconsin to fight budget cuts is now showing itself in such other completely representative communities as Berkeley, Seattle, Boulder and Cambridge. The "Wall Street" antagonism by itself is not broad enough, or intelligible enough, to suffice for a mass movement, of course.

To be frank, I work hard, I maintain generally acceptable hygiene and I prefer to sleep in a bed rather than a sidewalk. With that said – these individuals are bringing attention to a real problem. Wall Street does seem to have advantages that the rest of the so-called 99 percent of society do not. The problem with this movement, however, is that this is essentially where the protestors’ understanding of Wall Street ends. While these individuals likely understand very little about economics, the financial system or politics, they are bringing attention in a general sense to the problem, so in that regard, I’m thankful.

It is the furthering of that discussion that I’m hoping to do today with this column- at least in a small way. I would submit that a “Get Washington Out” campaign would be more fitting.
