StumbleUpon, the site that lets you discover the web through its “Stumble!” button, released its Best of StumbleUpon 2011 package, including the below infographic and its most popular links of the year. The most-popular topics of 2011 were the Japan earthquake and tsunami, the Royal Wedding the Steve Jobs‘s death. In fact, following Jobs’s Oct. 5 death there was a 199,500% increase in searches for the Apple co-founder. During the Super Bowl, there were some 41 mobile stumbles per second, which is not surprising given that 80% of people multi-task on their mobile devices while watching TV. The most popular links included quotes from Albert Einstien, street installations of Mark Jenkins and a humorous list of how to tick people off.

Who is the winner of the social bookmarking battle? Read/WriteWeb has a great article with a lot of empirical evidence to show who is winning. Unfortunately, the evidence for StumbleUpon is no where to be found. Despite the lack of evidence for StumbleUpon, it is clear that Del.icio.us and StumbleUpon are the clear winners with Ma.gnolia being a distant third. Here is an interesting table showing the number of users for the most popular social bookmarking sites.

Digg vs. Reddit vs. StumbleUpon vs. del.icio.us – Inspiration Bit
With so many social networking sites on the Web I’m sure everyone is curious about which one is a better promotional tool for blogs. So far I’ve experienced only the effects of the big four : Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us. I thought it would be beneficial to share my observations with others. It all started with a Group Writing Project – 37 Sources of Inspiration that was dugg to Digg’s front page on May 27, which resulted in over 17,000 visits in one day. The next big wave of traffic (over 18,000 visits) came on July 7th, when my two-months old post 16 Best-Loved Font Bits In Web Design that was featured on Blogging Pro hit Reddit’s home page.

Tag clouds are young. The term folksonomy itself was coined just over a year ago by Thomas Vander Wal on the IA Institute’s Members’ Discussion List in a response to Gene Smith and has yet to be a word even a medium-sized minority has heard, much less come to understand. However, here on Cloudalicio.us, we can already see that many items being tagged since the beginning of del.icio.us have stabilized.
The Ruby script below analyzes your del.icio.us links to generate a list of your favourite interests. It lists the tags that are most frequently used in your links. Because you may not have been diligent about descriptively tagging your links, this script uses the tags from *all* users, for *your* links. The result is a list of tags, sorted by the number of your links that have been associated with each tag.
