Bad habits...that could help you get ahead - 24 March 2006. Read full article Continue reading page |1|2|3|4 This feature is drawn from our free 64-page New Scientist Careers Guide for 2006. Get yours here. Are you always creative, punctual, cheerful, loyal, efficient, a great team player - a dream employee, in fact?

IF YOU'RE attentive to your job 120% of the time, you are punctual, alert and super-efficient from dawn to dusk; if you are friendly, popular and get great results; and if you get the job done without getting stressed or stroppy - then don't bother reading this. Everyone else, just remember: no one's perfect, whether it's just a bit of morning grumpiness or telling the occasional fib. While New Scientist would never encourage using bad behaviour to get ahead at work, we can promise you that there is certainly more than one way to look at things.

Are you always late? No boss wants to hire a slacker. On average people desire sleep between half past midnight and 8.30 am. Unfortunately in most careers being an owl isn't an advantage. Top 10 Things That Determine Happiness. Photo: meddygarnet Happiness is, by nature, a subjective quality with a definition like a moving target.

There is scant evidence — qualitative or quantitative — to lend convincing support to those life variables most critical in determining individual happiness, which is likely why past researchers committed to the scientific method rarely tried to tackle the subject. This is changing. Take, for example, the World Database of Happiness in Rotterdam, self-described as a, “continuous register of scientific research on subjective appreciation of life.”

Also, take the positive psychologists, a movement whose “members” perform scientific research into the nature of happiness and who published Character Strengths and Virtues: A Handbook and Classification, an 800-page behemoth that outlines all the characteristics, behaviors and conditions that lead to happiness. The Birth of Conversion Charles J. Alright. Why you should learn to lucid dream | Yes, I Can! by Robin Nixon. If you’ve never experienced it then you may find it hard to understand what lucid dreaming is all about.

In fact you may be thoroughly sceptical and dismiss the whole thing as silly nonsense. But I can tell you from personal experience that lucid dreams are very real and something that many millions of people regularly enjoy. Note: Due to the huge amount of interest that this post has generated I am now seriously considering writing a book on the subject, and I would welcome input from anyone with an interest. If you have any anecdotes, suggestions, dreams or anything else you’d like to share with me for possible inclusion in the book, please email me. Your contribution can be anonymous and you may change any and all names/characters as you wish.

I’ll send a free copy to all contributors if the book is published. Lucid dreaming is when you experience full consciousness while dreaming. When you ‘wake up’ inside a dream you can consciously appreciate just how wonderful dreams really are. The Benjamin Franklin Effect. The Misconception: You do nice things for the people you like and bad things to the people you hate.

The Truth: You grow to like people for whom you do nice things and hate people you harm. Benjamin Franklin knew how to deal with haters. Born in 1706 as the eighth of 17 children to a Massachusetts soap and candlestick maker, the chances Benjamin would go on to become a gentleman, scholar, scientist, statesman, musician, author, publisher and all-around general bad-ass were astronomically low, yet he did just that and more because he was a master of the game of personal politics. Like many people full of drive and intelligence born into a low station, Franklin developed strong people skills and social powers. All else denied, the analytical mind will pick apart behavior, and Franklin became adroit at human relations.

Franklin’s prospects were dim. At 17, Franklin left Boston and started his own printing business In Philadelphia. What exactly happened here? Let’s start with your attitudes.
