One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco.

Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world: I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building. I also have many friends and family members that collect toothpicks in their travels for me. See the sculpture for yourself at the Tinkering Studio through the end of June.

The mind can create all kinds of strange scenarios when we are asleep. In this series entitled Surreal-ity, photographer Kylie Woon brings those mind-bending stories and dreamy scenes to life.

Conveying all kinds of dramatic emotions, including loss, fear, anger, and restlessness, Woon creates self-portraits where she floats, flips, and flies across each frame in seemingly impossible arrangements. The artist says her life has always flip-flopped between being obsessed with the small things in life versus being able to see the bigger, grander picture. She compares her experiences to photography and the idea of being zoomed in and zoomed out. She says, "When I am zoomed in, everything in the universe is dark except for the inside of my head. Much like artist Sebastian Eriksson, Woon's passion for life, her emotional struggles, and her desire to feel all of the happy and sad emotions that come with life are evident in her work. San Francisco-based artist Jeremy Mann executes these sublime, moody cityscapes using oil paints. To create each work he relies on a wide range of techniques including surface staining, the use of solvents to wipe away paint, and the application of broad, gritty marks with an ink brayer. The resulting paintings are dark and atmospheric, urban streets seemingly drenched in rain and mystery. Mann’s work is in no way limited to cityscapes, he also paints the human figure, still lifes, and landscapes. He currently has work at John Pence Gallery and you can see many more of his cityscapes here.

Growing up can be a challenge, especially in the teenage years. Some people use writing or art as a creative outlet for all the emotions they keep inside. Sebastian Eriksson is an 18-year-old up-and-coming surrealist artist living in Sweden.

Not only is his artwork amazing, it's extremely thought-provoking as he adds descriptions of how his pieces relate to his life. For instance, in the piece above, he states: "This is another paradox that I've been working on for a couple of days. And for the piece immediately below: "One day I felt like I was lost and I had too much things to think about. We've all felt like Sebastian, but most of us do not have the talent to draw how we feel.
