L’institution se distingue avec ce patrimoine unique, un héritage des plus riches dans le pays. Concernant la répartition des livres, il semble que la Bibliothèque Générale qui inclue aussi la Joanina, possède 1.541.105 documents, l’espace réservé aux sciences primaires détient 65.150 documents, les sciences médicales : 69.453, les sciences sociales : 228.562, la science de la vie : 46.625, l’ingénierie, l’architecture et la science de la terre : 72.368, les sciences humaines : 362.245, et 16.754 documents en psychologie et sciences de l’éducation. Les centres d’investigation possèdent près de 12.066 documents. Un premier exemplaire des Lusíadas de 1572, un livre avec des enluminures et un exemplaire unique des célèbres plaques que D. Porto is home to (what many consider to be) the most beautiful bookstore in the world, Livraria Lello. Lisbon has one of the coolest and most popular bookstores, Ler Devegar. This post originally ran June 26, 2013. _________________________ We hear a lot about bookstores closing these days: many indies, your neighborhood Barnes & Noble maybe, and, well, every Borders. So I thought it would be refreshing to find the oldest bookstore in the world to get a little perspective. The Bertrand Bookstore in Lisbon, Portugal has been open since 1732.
Faure turned the store over to the Bertrand Brothers a few decades after opening it, and the Bertrands got their own printing press, held workshops on printing and writing, and even have their own font (the font of the store sign in the images below. Don’t you feel a little better? Lello Bookstore: The Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World. Little did I know that when I went looking for the oldest bookstore in the world, I would find, just up the coast of the same country, what could very well be the most beautiful bookstore in the world.
The Lello Bookstore was built in 1906 in Porto, Portugal by The Lello Brothers (Antonio and Jose) who formerly owned another bookstore a few streets away. Their new bookstore is one of the most ornate bookstores in the world, mixing Neo-Gothic and Art Dec elements (especially the facade, pictured below). Carved wood ceilings, a stain-glassed roof, an undulating, opulent red staircase, and even a built-in wheel-barrow on rails for moving the store’s 120,000 all make the Lello seem like the bookstore out of some fantasy-world (J.K.
Rowling herself lived in Porto for a short while). The bookstore experienced several decades of disrepair, but in 1995 a massive renovation project returned it to its former glory, and now it is as much a tourist-attraction as a bookstore. We have previously established that Portugal has the most beautiful bookstore in the world, but now it appears they also get the most awesome library. I came a cross a rather amazing one the other day, the library at Mafra National Palace in Portugal. It looks rather lovely. But you came here to hear about the library, right? The magnificent floor is covered with tiles of rose, grey and white marble. Alright, that’s very impressive, but marble tiles and old books do not an awesome library make. These guys: Yes. I imagine this is not a library I would like to spend the night in.
