Demystifying the Finnish Education System, Part II: Is Finland abolishing school subjects? - Voices in Education. In the months leading up to my move to Finland, friends and family regularly forwarded me any links to news articles about the Finnish education system they came across.

Demystifying the Finnish Education System, Part II: Is Finland abolishing school subjects? - Voices in Education

Those articles most often were about one of two things: the lack of testing and homework employed in the Finnish school system, and the rumors that Finland is “abolishing school subjects” in place of phenomenon-based learning. I addressed the first topic in a previous blog post, so I thought it was about time I addressed the the second question: Is Finland getting rid of school subjects? The short answer is no, but to better understand what changes are actually happening in Finland requires better understanding what “phenomenon-based learning”–the hallmark of the policy changes being referenced–means in practice, and in Finnish education policy.

A New Take on Traditional Grading System

What motivated such profound and positive changes? It wasn’t an expensive professional development program or a conference, a motivational speaker, a transformational change in schedule, or a big investment in technology. Rather, it is the grading reform we have been exploring and implementing over the past two-and-a-half years at Rowland Hall (UT) that is helping teachers feel confident providing necessary and appropriate instruction for their students.

Educational theorists and researchers have debated the limitations associated with traditional grading schemes for decades. Influential writers and thinkers like Ken O’Connor, Thomas Guskey, Douglas Reeves, Rick Wormeli, Robert Marzano, and Cathy Vatterott have pointed out the many flaws of percentage-based, A–F grades.

Fixin' to Teach: Get Your Own Food! A Bird Beak Adaptation Activity

Last week my fourth graders experimented with to see which bird beak was best for a particular food type. I have to say that this activity is probably one of my favorites!! I love life science. Heck, that's what I earned my degree in... Not to travel too far down memory lane, but when I taught middle school science, my favorite unit by far was the human body. I set up stations with different 'food' types & various tools that simulated bird beaks. Eighth grade Lesson Build a Thermos. Pathfinder 3rd and 4th Grade. RefdeskNextGen. Introduction to Thinking Routines Visible Thinking makes extensive use of learning routines that are thinking rich.

Visible Thinking

These routines are simple structures, for example a set of questions or a short sequence of steps, that can be used across various grade levels and content. What makes them routines, versus merely strategies, is that they get used over and over again in the classroom so that they become part of the fabric of classroom' culture. The routines become the ways in which students go about the process of learning. Thinking routines form the core of the Visible Thinking program.

Is goal oriented in that it targets specific types of thinking Gets used over and over again in the classroom Consists of only a few steps Is easy to learn and teach Is easy to support when students are engaged in the routine Can be used across a variety of context Can be used by the group or by the individual. It's been a long time since our last science update, but the seventh graders have been busy working on the Travel Channel Commercial Challenge. Students were challenged to research an assigned biome and create an infomercial that would make Travel Channel viewers want to visit that biome on their next vacation. Students not only had to develop their scientific knowledge with biomes and the biodiversity of plants and animals but they had to use their social studies skills to understand the location of the biomes and language arts skills to create persuasive scripts for their infomercials. Sifting through the #extracredit hashtag on Twitter, it seems there are more extra credit opportunities than learning opportunities.

If the situations I share below look familiar, it’s probably because many teachers are providing similar options for extra credit. Of course I took some liberties: I had to try to make some of it funny, because otherwise writing this post would make my blood pressure rise. Being so far removed from extra credit myself, it’s hard for me to put myself in the shoes of someone who still uses extra credit to motivate students. I write this post with the goal of helping teachers think for themselves, instead of telling them what I believe they should think. Maybe this post will reach reflective educators… Web Tools - Katie Ann Wilson's Resources. Control Alt Achieve.
