The aim of the exercise was to live well, not just to think clearly. This meant that philosophers like Plato and Epicurus were held in high regard as great teachers or gurus. People would come to Athens to sit at their feet and learn how to flourish as human individuals. Philosophy was a kind of therapy; philosophers often taught a kind of self-help. Less is the New More: Making the Most of Small Spaces

This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. This one looks a bit clinical, but has two single beds plus a pull-out double bed in between.

When you read in the New York Times that professional couples with children are moving into small one-bedroom apartments in Manhattan and sleeping in closets, perhaps this stuff could be useful. None of this stuff is cheap, nor, as far as I can tell is it available in North America, but there are ideas here that demonstrate how people can share a space and still get a little privacy, a good place to work and a lot of storage in a very small envelope. As someone who has never been motivated to work out, I thought I would add two things that have helped me to stay motivated, even if I let it slide for a few days.

How to Get a Complete Workout with Nothing But Your Body

First, I added my planned workouts as tasks in google calendar. Now, I have to check them off as I complete them. If I get lazy, they start to back up and I start to feel guilty about it. I'll push them back and reset the schedule, but at least it gets me working out again instead of feeling like I've already failed and just give up on it. Second, I started using Fitocracy, which turns working out into a game. Flagged. Big chocolate. Baked Cheese Balls. Spring Clean & Tidy Week: Yoga Mat Sling.

The Easter Island “Heads” Have Bodies. Maybe this isn’t a newsflash to anyone but me, but, um, the Moai “heads” on Easter Island have bodies. Because some of the statues are set deep into the ground, and because the heads on the statues are disproportionately large, many people (myself included) tend to think of them as just big heads. But the bodies (generally not including legs, though there is at least one kneeling statue) are there — in many cases, underground. What’s even more interesting — there are petroglyphs (rock markings) that have been preserved below the soil level, where they have been protected from erosion. This research report has been making the rounds; it discusses recent progress by The Easter Island Statue Project to uncover, study, and catalogue two statues. It includes (among the dry details of the research) a day-by-day journal of the work, as well as remarkable photographs showing the petroglyphs and team members excavating. (Via Jason Scott.)

Red Velvet Brownies with White Chocolate Buttercream. For the past three weeks I’ve been craving a yellow butter cake with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream frosting.

Red Velvet Brownies with White Chocolate Buttercream

This post obviously isn’t about that cake. It’s about these Red Velvet Brownies with White Chocolate Frosting that I nearly had to wipe the drool off of my keyboard from when I came across the recipe. A chewy, dense, bright red (and in my opinion, all red velvet should be) brownie topped with a fluffy white chocolate buttercream frosting that actually tastes like the white chocolate I fell in love with as a child. These are the type of brownies that will make your old Aunt Rhonda kick herself for not thinking to bring to the church picnic before her old rival, Harriett, did just that. They’ll make people swoon and clamor over each other for seconds.

I’ve only made one other red velvet recipe in my lifetime and I had forgotten about the destructive power of red food coloring so be prepared to go slowly when it comes time to add it in.
