Rape Culture 101

Frequently, I receive requests to provide a definition of the term "rape culture. " I've referred people to the Wikipedia entry on rape culture, which is pretty good, and I like the definition provided in Transforming a Rape Culture: A rape culture is a complex of beliefs that encourages male sexual aggression and supports violence against women. It is a society where violence is seen as sexy and sexuality as violent. In a rape culture, women perceive a continuum of threatened violence that ranges from sexual remarks to sexual touching to rape itself. But my correspondents—whether they are dewy noobs just coming to feminism, advanced feminists looking for a source, or disbelievers in the existence of the rape culture—always seem to be looking for something more comprehensive and less abstract: What is the rape culture?

Little Maya was all curly brown hair, doe-like dark eyes, and adorable in her shiny pink nightgown. I wanted to squeal, "Maya, you're so cute! Look at you! Turn around and model that pretty ruffled gown, you gorgeous thing! " Illegally Park-ed - Page 1 - News - Orange County - OC Weekly. I just have a minor gripe... I totally understand why Poison Ivy was put into the video. She definitely fits the trope in many stories. But I feel it's a little unfair to lump her in with all these other examples, most of which are one-shot characters, when she's had the benefit of being around a lot longer, and thus been able to receive more development. There have been stories highlighting her more interesting characteristics, and over the years she has become a much more interesting character than most of these other one-dimensional trope embodiments. Specifically, let's talk about the "Sheets or Bar" campaign, the only ad series I've seen lately that can compete with the obnoxiousness of Virgin Mobile's stalker humor. The concept? Actors pretend to be Bounce customers and explain whether they use individual dryer sheets or an in-machine "bar" device that releases a sheet with every load. Compelling idea, right? No, I'm not sure either. Sex and the Fat Girl: Behind Closed Doors. I recently noticed that two commenters on my "Too Fat to F*ck" post expressed dismay at the idea of seeing ANYONE displaying sexual affection in public, not just fat people.

But I've noticed that more than half of those romantic comedies out there tends to have main characters who do highly questionable things that would get a person arrested or killed in real life. Yet we're supposed to find it romantic? The same thing can be found in books too, so in a way this is older than rome itself. Bedsider.org: Sex(y) Education. Find a doctor, find a method, find a happier you in bed. " So reads the tagline of Bedsider.org, a new online resource operated by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Though still in its beta version, the Bedsider site is already full of useful tools like SMS birth control reminders and video factoids that manage to inform without being patronizing or boring. Hooray! We learned about Bedsider at a panel during SXSW last week on rebranding birth control (more on that later), and were excited to hear that the site was inspired by suggestions from real women of many ages and backgrounds—women who weren't exactly psyched about the typical reproductive health campaigns out there. Bedsider.org is also home to a host of helpful videos that debunk rumors (FYI: Douching with Coke will not prevent pregnancy) and provide personal stories to give visitors to the site additional context. Women's Interviews - The Daily Femme. Contributed by Ashleigh In India, there is a particularly bad-ass lady named Sampat Devi Pal, the head of the gulabi gang, which means pink gang in Hindi – so named after the bright pink sari the group’s members wear.

The Pink Gang is supposedly the largest women’s vigilante group in the world. Pal is seen as a woman who can get things done: abused women from all over the area come to her for help with their problems. Operating out of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous and poverty-stricken state, Pal’s group gained notoriety in early days for beating up men who abused their wives. If they heard a husband was being violent, they would show up at his door with sticks called laathis and demand he change his ways. Pal has her own story, and perhaps reason for doing what she does: married off at 12, having her first child at 15, she now works all day every day counseling women, organizing sit-ins, and leading rallies. For many women in India, the Pink Gang is their last hope for justice. Women's human rights: Canada & the world - New York Times Blames 11-Year-Old Girl for Her Gang-Rape.
