J'avais alors 10 ans et je m'en souviens comme si c'était hier. J'étais au bord de la Grand-Rue à Clarens et soudains j'ai entend des sirènes puisj'ai vus passer des dizaines de camions de pompiers filer à toute allure en direction de Montreux. Certains avais des chaines à neige et des étincelles jaillissais sous les roues des ses camions. Ensuite, j'ai été avec mon père voir de plus prés, c’était impressionnant pour un petitgarçon. Un sentiment de fin du monde tellement il y avais de camions de pompiers,de voitures de police et autres véhicules. Je vous dit, comme si c'était hier. J. Soucieux de son développement et du renouvellement de sa clientèle, Montreux, à l’instar de Newport la même année, s’ouvre au rock en 1969, le groupe Ten Years After en est la tête d’affiche. Tandis que les puristes hurlent à la trahison, le mouvement est inéluctable et Montreux proposera en parallèle des concerts rock tout le reste de l’année, sous le label Super Pop Montreux. La Rose d’Or, de son côté, réoriente sa programmation, des variétés vers le rock. De 1969 à 1974, le gotha du genre défilera à Montreux devenue capitale du rock: Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Santana, Canned Heat, Yes, Chicago, Deep Purple, Frank Zappa… (contrats signés, Jimi Hendrix et les Doors auraient dû s’y produire fin 1970). Frank Zappa:The 1971 European winter tour gets the award for being the mostdisasterous. On December 4, we were working at the Casino de Montreux in Geneva, Switzerland, right on the edge of the lake- just in front of Igor Stravinsky Street- a venue noted for its jazz festivals.In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong," theplace suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had a bottle rocketor a Roman candle and had fired it into the ceiling, at which point therattan covering started to burn (other versions of the story claim theblaze was the result of faulty wiring).There were between twenty-five hundred and three thousand kids packed into the room- well over capacity.

The main street, the Grand Rue, is where many of the hotels are located. But this is a busy, hectic road one street off of the pretty promenade. This article originally began in 2011, but we feared it was being lifted to use on the 2011 anniversary CD set (much cheaper than paying the writer!) So took it off line. With the publication of the Machine Head book due in 2015, it seems timely to bring it back and update. I have left on the original comments as well. We would love to hear from anyone who was at the Zappa concert, or has any recollections of the events in Montreux.
