Because some other search engines (Google, etc.) index parts of Flickr Hive Mind, you may have been led here from one of them. Welcome to Flickr Hive Mind, almost certainly the best search engine for photography on the web. If you are a Flickr user and use Flickr Stats you may have seen people being led to your photos via Flickr Hive Mind (as a Referrer). Flickr Hive Mind is a data mining tool for the Flickr photography database, allowing search by: tags(keywords); Flickr photography groups; Flickr users, their contacts, and favorites; free text; the Flickr Explore algorithm for interestingness.

From hot springs, geothermal energy has been used for bathing since Paleolithic times and for space heating since ancient Roman times, but it is now better known for electricity generation.

Geothermal energy

Worldwide, 11,400 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power is online in 24 countries in 2012.[5] An additional 28 gigawatts of direct geothermal heating capacity is installed for district heating, space heating, spas, industrial processes, desalination and agricultural applications in 2010.[6] Geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly,[7] but has historically been limited to areas near tectonic plate boundaries. Recent technological advances have dramatically expanded the range and size of viable resources, especially for applications such as home heating, opening a potential for widespread exploitation. Geothermal wells release greenhouse gases trapped deep within the earth, but these emissions are much lower per energy unit than those of fossil fuels.

History. The Happy Tale of One Geothermal Conversion. Lots of folks in Maine are looking at ways to convert their heating systems over to less expensive ones, with a more stable operating price than gas or oil.

The Happy Tale of One Geothermal Conversion

The following narrative was contributed by Kevin Olson of Sagadahoc County. Thanks, Kevin! A couple of years ago, I began investigating ways I could reduce my use of fossil fuels and become more environmentally friendly. I already had a Toyota Prius, which has very low CO emissions and is very fuel-efficient. Oil prices were rising out of sight and my house had baseboard hot water heating which used heating oil. My oil company cleaned my furnace and told me I only had 2 to 5 years left before I should be looking to replace it.

I called and emailed about 8 places inquiring about their geothermal services. Bob had his own business doing energy audits and also worked for Pine State Drilling. We were currently in March of 2011. While waiting for the drilling to begin, the inside work was started. Www.derm.qld.gov.au/factsheets/pdf/water/w141.pdf. Stop Mining for Oil (and Coal), Start Drilling for Heat. The center of the Earth is a roiling ball of heat, roughly 6,000 degrees Celsius as near as we can tell without a sci-fi tunneling effort.

Stop Mining for Oil (and Coal), Start Drilling for Heat

The closest humanity has come to that molten core is some 12 kilometers beneath the continental crust in Russia, which isn’t even halfway through said crust and akin to drilling into an apple without piercing the skin. Yet, it’s pretty clear that a lot of that core and mantle heat makes its way to or near the surface—witness: Yellowstone, the big island of Hawaii, all of Iceland—offering a cheap, constant and potentially clean source of energy. There are already several methods for harvesting the energy in this rock that’s heated by the decay of radioactive elements. It’s also something humans have been doing for a long time—at least since 1911 in Italy to be exact when locals opened the world’s first geothermal power plant in the Valle del Diavolo.

So why in the world don’t we use more geothermal energy? Global Oil and Gas Industry News. By Jamie Hutchins | No comment Published on June 20th, 2011 The Next Emerging-Energy Market.

Global Oil and Gas Industry News

The petroleum industry is at a crossroads. A perfect storm of declining reserves, aging oilfields, increasing costs for exploration, operating, and decommissioning, volatile oil prices, and the uptick trending of “green” energy … it has never been more important to make the most out of existing reserves, assets and infrastructure. Geothermal energy is an emerging worldwide energy market. Geothermal has some major barriers to entry to the mainstream energy market.

Using proven technology, expertise and reservoir data from the petroleum industry, this unlikely partnership can provide a springboard for the geothermal industry to enter the mainstream renewable energy market, while at the same time benefiting the petroleum industry. Geothermal in the Oil field – How? The United States alone produces about seven million barrels of co-produced fluid every day.
