Depuis les années 70, Deci (1975, 1980) et Ryan (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2000, 2002) ont proposé différentes formulations et reformulations théoriques qui ont permis de conceptualiser ce résultat et donne lieu à une volumineuse littérature afférente produite aux cours des trois dernières décennies. La dernière formulation en date (Deci & Ryan, 2002) repose, selon les propos des auteurs, sur ce qu’ils appellent des « mini-théories » : la théorie de l’évaluation cognitive, la théorie de l’intégration organismique, la théorie de l’orientation causale et celle des besoins de bases.
