20 great things to do in Edinburgh - Time Out Edinburgh. By Time Out editors 1. Plan your festival viewing The cultural jamboree that takes over the city in August is generally referred to as 'the Festival', but it comprises separately administrated elements. Film, books, jazz, politics, art all have their own festival, and the Fringe, which broke away from the main shebang in 1998 and starts a week earlier, is a whole other ball game. Plan your schedule using the online resource www.edinburghfestivals.co.uk, or arm yourself with a copy of The List (www.list.co.uk) or the Fringe festival brochure that emerges in June. Hot spots for Fringe favourites include the Traverse Theatre and the Hub, the Grade A-listed former General Assembly church that's fascinating to visit at any time of year.

Featuring Django Django, Chvrches, King Creosote, The Rezillos, Treacherous Orchestra, Fiddler’s Bid, William.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 21st anniversary Street Party and made it one of the best in our history. There were incredible performances from all our bands on both the Waverley Stage & The Scottish Stage, keeping revelers warm through the bells with dancing in the streets. A huge thanks to Django Django, Chvrches, King Creosote, Treacherous Orchestra, Fiddler’s Bid, The Rezillos and William Douglas for making the party a night to remember. Also The Rewinder Stage provided the soundtrack which had the whole arena dancing, with DJ Swiss and VJ’s extraordinaire Buttercup & Pixel! The biggest tunes, the greatest moments, the faces, the inventions that Scotland gave the world, all mixed live on screens throughout the arena.

But the audiences who attended all three days of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay events made this an extra special year, a friendlier, welcoming, more enthusiastic crowd will be harder to find on the planet and we can’t thank you enough! Edinburgh Hogmanay revellers face stormy weather. Revellers gearing up to attend the Capital’s Hogmanay celebrations have been reminded to dress up warm, as forecasters warned the event could be hit by stormy weather. Thousands of people are expected to descend on Princes Street for the world-renowned event, and organisers vowed that any decision on whether or not to cancel the event due to extreme weather would be kept “open until the last minute.”

It came as the met office said the recent stormy weather was likely to continue into the New Year and revellers could expect it to be “wet and windy”. And while the forecast will change over the next few days, with the Met office set to provide hourly updates on the day itself, those attending were reminded to ensure they wore appropriate attire, with Councillor Gavin Barrie warning: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.”

He said: “Our Hogmanay celebrations are a three-day event, meaning we need two days of ideally “still” weather. Embo (29 Haddington Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh) | The List.
