Hardcore post-punk pioneer Guy Picciotto talks Fugazi, Rites of Spring this week on ‘The Pharmacy’ Hardcore post-punk pioneer Guy Picciotto talks Fugazi, Rites of Spring this week on ‘The Pharmacy’ Gregg Foreman’s radio program The Pharmacy is a music / talk show playing heavy soul, raw funk, 60′s psych, girl groups, Krautrock. French yé-yé, Hammond organ rituals, post-punk transmissions and “ghost on the highway” testimonials and interviews with the most interesting artists and music makers of our times… This week hardcore post-punk pioneer Guy Picciotto of musical revolutionaries Fugazi and Rites of Spring.

Fugazi, with their reasonably priced records and shows, demonstrated how bands could find their own way without the preconceived notion that you needed corporate label backing to have an impact (and a career!). The conversation explores the early days of DC punk, meeting the Cramps and legendary Atlantic Records mogul Ahmet Ertegun’s attempts to sign the band, the inspiration behind Rites of Spring and so much more… Mr. Set List: You can download the show in its entirety here. Le Musicassette › Rares. PostPunk Oddities. The late 1970s / early 1980s were essentially the perfect time for forming an avant-pop band/project. The exaggerated claims of prog-rock were starting to fizzle out and there was a need to re-evaluate the immediacy of the pop band. The punk aesthetic suggested that advanced musicianship / music-theory knowledge was not a necessary ingredient for making music and opened the way for more performative/dadaist/DIY scenarios. The mid-80s manufactured pop project hadn't yet broken in - a project which was partly responsible for the 1990s 'over-serious' attitude.

Technology-wise, the late 70s see the introduction of more affordable synthesizers, yet predate the mid/late-80s cheap mass-produced keyboards. Seemingly contradictory scenes as punk, disco, funk and minimal-electro all happen around the same time, with some bands digging into all of them with a genuine curiosity and not in a calculated attempt to "be experimental". During my tenure, I’ve DJed post-punk, shoegaze, coldwave, minimal synth, and everything in between. However, these days I’ve been leaning heavily on the new beat side of things, tapping into the Belgian subculture. For those unfamiliar with the genre (for shame!) , new beat is a hyrbid of EBM, acid house and the Chicago/Detroit dance scene, and some of the best tracks walk a fine line between all three. Tempos are slow, lyrics and samples are usually sexually charged, and acid squelches are plentiful. Many of the tracks were written and performed by the same core group of producers, with the singers usually acting as the only variable in the mix (also see Italo).

History lesson aside, many new beat records are affordable, and like any insular dance movement, there was a flood of songs on the market. Iconoclass is yet another project from these dudes, and quite possibly the best. *download it here* Alternative rock in the 1980s (80s) Loop - Forever by Dedukrovski 24,437 views Loop was a South London band founded in 1986 by Robert Hampson and his wife, Bex, and active until 1991.

The band was formed in 1986 by Robert Hampson (vocals, guitar), with wife Bex on drums. Bex was soon replaced by John Wills (of The Servants) and Glen Ray, with James Endeacott on guitar. Initially releasing records on their own Head label, their first release was 1987's '16 Dreams', with debut album Heaven's End following later that year. Ray and Bex left, to be replaced by Endeacott, Wills and Neil MacKay, the band also being signed up by Chapter 22 Records, returning with a more polished sound with the 'Collision' single in 1988. They then hopped labels again to Beggars Banquet subsidiary Situation Two, releasing the 'Arc-Lite' single in 1989 and the third and final studio album A Gilded Eternity in 1990.

The band split in 1991, with Hampson briefly joining Godflesh before forming Main with Dowson. ---Members ---Discography 1987 Heaven's End. Post punk, New Wave,Cold Wave,Gothic Rock ecc. EAR VADER | Webzine d'actualités musicales.
