Voyager 1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Voyager 1 spacecraft is a 722 kilogram (1,592 lb ) space probe launched by NASA in 1977, to study the outer Solar System and interstellar medium . Operating for 34 years, 7 months and 19 days as of today ( current operation time ), the spacecraft receives routine commands and transmits data back to the Deep Space Network . At a distance of 120 astronomical units (1.8x10 10 km ) as of February 2012, [ 2 ] it is the farthest man-made object from Earth .

Question: Are the distance counters rolling backwards? Answer: Often they are, and it's actually not an error. This is caused by the fact that Earth moves around the sun more quickly than either Voyager spacecraft is departing from Earth. So, at certain times of the year, the distance between Earth and each Voyager actually decreases.
