Radical dual tilting blade helicopter design targets speeds of over 270mph. As one of the contenders in the race to win a $US100 billion contract from the US government for the next generation of attack helicopter in the Army’s Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) program, AVX Aircraft Company has conceived a futuristic machine kitted out with coaxial rotors, ducted fans and a retractable undercarriage that could hit speeds of over 270 mph (435 km/h).

View all For some decades now, the US Army has been incrementally upgrading its aging fleet of helicopters, but that approach is becoming expensive and limits are being reached as to what can be added to legacy platforms. As part of the overall JMR-TD program, the US Army-led Future Vertical Lift (FVL) stage aims to replace the service’s aging helicopter fleet with the Black Hawk, Apache, and Chinook all in line to be supplanted. The AVX concept is one of those proposed to the US Army as a possible replacement. Sikorsky and Boeing Team Submit New Army Helicopter Design - USNI News

Sikorsky Photo A joint Sikorsky-Boeing team has submitted their initial design for a new high-speed compound helicopter called the SB-1 Defiant to the U.S. Army. “Last week we submitted our initial design and risk report to the customer,” said Doug Shidler, one of the two co-program directors for the industry team, during a Tuesday teleconference. “Next week we will be conducting our initial design and risk review with them.” The high-speed compound helicopter design is the team’s entry into the Army’s Joint Multirole (JMR) risk reduction effort for the Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program that is intended to replace the long-serving Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk.

Eventually, a derivative of the FVL could replace the U.S. Thus far, Shidler said that the Sikorsky-Boeing team has completed a preliminary design review for the Defiant aircraft and are about to start working on the detailed design. Of Leonardo da Vinci’s many areas of study, perhaps this Renaissance man’s favorite was the area of aviation.

Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Machine Invention

Da Vinci seemed truly excited by the possibility of people soaring through the skies like birds. One of da Vinci’s most famous inventions, the flying machine (also known as the "ornithopter") ideally displays his powers of observation and imagination, as well as his enthusiasm for the potential of flight. The design for this invention is clearly inspired by the flight of winged animals, which da Vinci hoped to replicate. In fact, in his notes, he mentions bats, kites and birds as sources of inspiration. Perhaps the inspiration of the bat shines through the most, as the two wings of the device feature pointed ends commonly associated with the winged creature. The pilot would lie face down in the center of the invention on a board. For more information on Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine invention, please visit:
