The research firm also found consumer awareness about AR remains low. Juniper predicted more than 2.5 billion AR apps, mostly games, will be downloaded per year by 2017. Retailers increasingly see AR as a way to increase consumer engagement, Juniper said, and they can it use it to provide additional product information or for branded virtual games.

However, consumer awareness and lagging technology is a barrier to AR growth, the research firm found. Technology limitations including phone cameras, GPS, digital compasses and markerless tracking means a less-than-optimal consumer experience for AR, Juniper said. Even some high-end smartphone cameras can lack “sufficient sensitivity to trigger an AR experience unless light conditions were optimal," Juniper said. Those problems will likely limit enterprise adoption in the short term, Juniper said. Mobile Augmented Reality Entertainment, LBS & Retail Strategies 2012-2017. The new version of the SDK introduces a number of improvements which allow developers greater access to sensor data, plus it adds support for Windows 8, and offers improvement to the Kinect Studio developer tools. The Kinect for Windows platform allows for more commercial implementations of the Kinect technology, and has been designed specifically for use with Windows PCs, as opposed to the Xbox 360. The sensor connects with the PC via a USB cable, and is now available in 32 markets worldwide where it’s sold for $249 USD.

Kinect Fusion, Microsoft’s 3-D Modeling Technology, Is Coming To The Kinect For Windows SDK. Kinect Fusion, the Microsoft Research project which uses the Kinect sensor to create 3D models of objects and environments, will be made available in the Kinect for Windows SDK, Microsoft announced today.

No word yet on when exactly that integration will go live, however – Microsoft only confirmed it will come in “a future release” of the developer toolkit. That same SDK was just updated in October, however, which brought a number of new features, including access to extended-range depth data beyond 4 meters – a necessary upgrade for something like Kinect Fusion to properly function, we should note. Originally a research project from Microsoft’s lab in Cambridge, U.K., Kinect Fusion works by taking the incoming depth data in the Kinect for Windows sensor, and uses the sequence of frames to build a highly detailed 3-D map of either an object, or even an environment, like an entire room, for example.
