how to move to the cloud

On Tuesday, software-as-a-service company Zoho announced CloudSQL : a new, cloud-friendly middleware layer giving cloud applications access to its SaaS reporting and database software, Zoho Reports . Though still in its early stages of development, CloudSQL will bridge the gap between software-as-a-service, cloud computing, and on-premises software by allowing cloud developers to access data on Zoho's servers through web services, and on-premises developers to access it using SQL as if it were a conventional database. Currently, CloudSQL can only use data from Zoho's online reporting and data analysis service, Zoho Reports. Other Zoho services will be made available in the future, including Zoho CRM, and Zoho Creator, the company's web application platform. More intriguing is what Zoho wants to do after providing access to its own services; the company intends to extend the CloudSQL middleware so that it can be used to access non-Zoho data sources.

Cloud Computing: Vertical Scalability is Still Your Problem

If you remember this somewhat altered scene from the Princess Bride, you also remember that no one had any answers for Inigo. That's apropos of this discussion, because no one has any good answers for this version of Inigo either. And no, a holocaust cloak is not going to save the day this time.

Cloud Computing: Will data integration be its Achilles Heel?

The premise that if you don’t have an infrastructure comprised solely of Infrastructure 2.0 components then you cannot realize an automated, on-demand data center is, in fact, wrong. While the capabilities of modern hardware that come with Infrastructure 2.0 such as a standards-based API able to be leveraged by automation systems certainly makes the task all the more simple, it is not the only way that components can be automated. In fact, “legacy” infrastructure has been automated for years using other mechanisms that can certainly be incorporated into the dynamic data center model.

Cloud disrupts, creates channel opportunities | The Wisdom of Clouds - CNET News

http://news.cnet.com/8301-19413_3-20052218-240.html If you are a value-added reseller or systems integrator today--a member of the so-called "channel"--you are keenly aware of the new reality that cloud computing is bringing to bear. In cloud, your traditional technology suppliers are now interfacing directly with the customer, and the channel's "value add" of customer relationship management, technology delivery, and solutions development is being seriously threatened. Or at least so it seems on the surface.

Rational Survivability: The Big Four Cloud Computing Providers: Security Compared (Part I)

James Urquhart posted a summary a week or so ago of what he described as the "Big 4" players in Cloud Computing. It was a slightly humorous pass at describing their approaches and offerings: Below is a table that lists these key players, and compares their offerings from the perspective of four core defining aspects of clouds.

Hypervisor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypervisor In computing , a hypervisor , also called virtual machine manager ( VMM ), is one of many hardware virtualization techniques allowing multiple operating systems , termed guests , to run concurrently on a host computer. It is so named because it is conceptually one level higher than a supervisory program . The hypervisor presents to the guest operating systems a virtual operating platform and manages the execution of the guest operating systems. Multiple instances of a variety of operating systems may share the virtualized hardware resources. Hypervisors are very commonly installed on server hardware , with the function of running guest operating systems, that themselves act as servers. The term can be used to describe the interface provided by the specific cloud computing functionality infrastructure as a service (IaaS). [ 1 ] [ 2 ]

Virtual PC guy's blog

Well, I just realized that I had dived into talking about how to do things with Hyper-V without first taking the time to orient you on some of the terminology used. So I would now take the time to correct that. Note that many of these terms are not used in the user interface / documentation for Hyper-V. The reason for this is that from an operational "getting things done" point of view you do not need to know about most of this. However, once you start discussing architecture it becomes necessary to know about this stuff: Hypervisor

Convirture and Eucalyptus Systems to partner on open-source, cloud management | ZDNet

Later this week, sources tell me that Convirture , maker of open source-based virtualization management software, will announce a very close partnership with Eucalyptus Systems , creators of the eponymous private cloud platform. The agreement will have the two companies working together to integrate ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise with both Eucalyptus’ open-source cloud platform and Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition . In addition, the two companies will cooperate on sales, marketing and support activities. ConVirt 2.0 Enterprise is meant to provide Eucalyptus private cloud users with management capabilities that were previously only available on closed-source products.
