Reporters on the scene raced to gather information on what was unfolding, and citizens stayed, eyes glued, to their screens to catch every update. I was glued to Twitter. Twitter is spectacular in its ability to track the unfolding of events in real time; reporters and eyewitnesses tweet information as it becomes available, with little filter. As words jump out of panicked mouths, they are picked up by smart phones and tablets and transmitted to the eagerly waiting news world. Later, in the summaries posted to news sites as articles, the details are smoothed out, the process of getting the details erased. What was unfolding on this Wednesday morning was multiple shooting suspects who, confirmed early, had shot a Canadian soldier next to the war memorial on Parliament Hill. TORONTO – In Quebec on Monday, two Canadian soldiers were hit by a car driven by Martin Couture-Rouleau, a 25-year-old Canadian who, as The Globe and Mail reported, “converted to Islam recently and called himself Ahmad Rouleau.”
One of the soldiers died, as did Courture-Rouleau when he was shot by police upon apprehension after allegedly brandishing a large knife. Police speculated that the incident was deliberate, alleging the driver waited for two hours before hitting the soldiers, one of whom was wearing a uniform. The incident took place in the parking lot of a shopping mall 30 miles southeast of Montreal, “a few kilometres from the Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean, the military academy operated by the Department of National Defence.” First, Canada has spent the last 13 years proclaiming itself a nation at war. That’s the nature of war. The issue here is not justification (very few people would view attacks on soldiers in a shopping mall parking lot to be justified). The Boston bombing produces familiar and revealing reactions.

There's not much to say about Monday's Boston Marathon attack because there is virtually no known evidence regarding who did it or why. There are, however, several points to be made about some of the widespread reactions to this incident. Much of that reaction is all-too-familiar and quite revealing in important ways: (1) The widespread compassion for yesterday's victims and the intense anger over the attacks was obviously authentic and thus good to witness.
