(SABC) Local and international athletes, including politicians, took part in the Heroes Marathon in honour of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, from Qunu to Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Sports and recreation MEC, Pemmy Majodina, says the Heroes Marathon plays a vital role in uniting the people of South Africa and the world through sport. This is the first Heroes Marathon that links Mandela's home at Qunu and Walter Sisulu University a year after Mandela passed on. The golf day will take place on 2 April 2015 at Steyn City’s 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Design championship golf course. All funds raised will be used to purchase wool. The wool will then be transformed into beautiful blankets for those in need. According to 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day founder, Carolyn Steyn, “67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day aims to collect 21 000 blankets before April 2015. The blankets will first be displayed at the Union Buildings, covering the vast grounds in a sea of colourful blankets made with our own two hands around the giant statue of Nelson Mandela on the 21st of April 2015 to celebrate South Africa’s 21 years of democracy. (SABC) Scores of people who want to see former president Nelson Mandela's grave have flocked to the Nelson Mandela Museum at Qunu in the Eastern Cape over the past two weeks. Tourists both local and international are increasingly showing interest in viewing the historically important sites associated with Madiba. According to Museum management, the United States is leading in the number of tourists visiting the museum, followed by England and Germany. Tourists from the African continent have also been seen visiting the sites. Thus far, the museum has got their ducks in a row and there has been no problem in accommodating the tourists from around the world.

Museum communications manager, Nokuzola Tetani, says tourists are usually scarce in the museum during December, but things have changed since the passing of Madiba. This will be the first Nelson Mandela Lecture to be delivered since his death in December 2013. The Lecture themed "Building social cohesion through active citizenship" includes dialogue on gender equality and focus on finding ways to develop and improve citizenship. The Lecture will take place at the Cape Town City Hall where Nelson Mandela delivered his first speech as a free man following his release from prison 1990. Bachelet, who is currently serving a second term, is Chile’s first female president. Speaking to the SABC, gender activist Nomboni Gasa says the lecture gives South Africans an opportunity to reflect on the country’s progress in relation to the rest of the world.
