Security tightened for E Cape by-elections:Wednesday 27 November 2013

(SABC) The Independent Electoral Commission(IEC) in the Eastern Cape has beefed up its preparations ahead of the by-elections across the province on Wednesday. Four by-elections are to be held in three municipalities, including two in the hotly contested Kouga Municipality to the west of Port Elizabeth. The almost hung council of the largely coastal municipality of Kouga has seen the African National Congress(ANC) and Democratic Allaince (DA) sending in their top-brass to woo voters. The electoral body is also not relenting in its groundwork. The IEC in the province has sent its top provincial management to the Kouga by-elections as a back-up to its ground staff. The four wards became vacant in some of the Eastern Cape's troubled municipalities, due to deaths and resignations.

(SABC) The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape says the voting process at 18 voting stations in three wards in the province is running smoothly. The wards which are being contested were previously represented by the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and an independent candidate respectively. The voting stations close at 9 pm. IEC spokesperson, Leonora Jacobs, says no incidents have been reported so far. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor died Municipal ward by-elections are also being held in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, and Northern Cape. In a statement the IEC says about 10 wards will be contested by 37 candidates, representing 13 political parties and four independent candidates. Ward 2 in Kgatelopele Municipality at Danielskuil in the Northern Cape will be contested by Yvonne Juliana Kerneels of the ANC and Johannes Baaitjie of the DA.

(SABC) National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Zanele Magwaza-Msibi says her supporters are being intimidated, ahead of a highly-contested by-election in eThekwini's ward 39, which encompasses the KwaMashu Hostel. Magwaza-Msibi rounded up on Monday the NFP's campaign with a door-to-door drive in the area. The eThekwini's ward 39 was vacated by an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor who was charged with murder and illegal possession of a firearm. The NFP alleges that its posters have been defaced and others have been removed. Both the NFP and the IFP have lost members in political violence in the area. (SABC) KwaZulu-Natal police have been deployed around the province to ensure the smooth running of Wednesday's by-elections. Voting is underway in KwaMashu, where there have been several cases of political violence recently, as well as in the Vulamehlo, Nongoma, Umtshezi and Abaqulusi districts. These are likely to be the last by-elections before the country goes to the polls on May 7. KZN Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu says no incidents of political intolerance have been reported on Wednesday. Mchunu adds: "In Escourt, the ward where there is an election, is not one of those very difficult wards.
