Drive Trains

Rack & Pinion. Sproket. Gear. Two meshing gears transmitting rotational motion.

Gear

Note that the smaller gear is rotating faster. Although the larger gear is rotating less quickly, its torque is proportionally greater. One subtlety of this particular arrangement is that the linear speed at the pitch diameter is the same on both gears. The gears in a transmission are analogous to the wheels in a crossed belt pulley system. List of gear nomenclature. Addendum[edit] Principal dimensions The addendum is the height by which a tooth of a gear projects beyond (outside for external, or inside for internal) the standard pitch circle or pitch line; also, the radial distance between the pitch diameter and the outside diameter.[1]
