Bowhunting Tips. How to eat Squirrel. August 02, 2010 at 04:35 PM BY ED "Illinoisdeerhunter" SMITH My son, Jed went on his first successful squirrel hunting trip last fall. He was 8 years old and I want to instill in him the notion that we don’t waste what we harvest. Therefore, I showed Jed how to clean a squirrel. Aftrewards, Jed and I thought it might be a good idea to show through a step-by-step series or pictures just how easy squirrel cleaning and preparing can be. When my daddy, Ed Sr. taught me back in the late 1960s, I vividly recall Dad describing squirrel skinning as follows, “Ya got to take off his shirt first then take off his pants.” First, lay the squirrel on it’s back. The first thing to do is make a cut at the base of the tail, between the tail and the rectum. Then, firmly step on the tail up near the base and grasp the hind legs firmly and pull slowly but steadily “taking off the squirrel’s shirt.”

Next, remove the rest of the skin so that only the carcass remains. How to Eat Wild Rabbit. How to Prepare Game Birds. Photo by Outdoor Life Online Editor 1. FIELD DRESS ASAP A bird should be field dressed soon after it is shot, particularly in warm weather. field dressing is a simple operation. first, lay the bird on its back and pull the feathers off from below the breastbone to the anal opening, clearing the area for the first cut. make the cut from the soft area below the breastbone down to the anal opening, being careful not to puncture the intestine. reach in and take out the viscera, pulling downward toward the anal opening. then remove the windpipe and crop. 2. 3.

KEEP AIR CIRCULATING Unless the outside temperature is very cold, try to avoid carrying birds in a lined game pocket, where minimal cooling will take place. it's far better to hang the birds from your belt or a sling, exposing them to the air.
