It partitions the users of a particular page, feature, etc into two groups at random, exposes them to experimental treatments, then observes their behavior to see which group is more likely to take a particular action of interest (the "conversion"). The resulting conversion rates can be tested statistically to see whether they are dissimilar to a significant degree -- if they are, you can be confident that the dissimilarity is caused by the difference in the treatments under experiment.
