8 Steps Using Unwrap UVW Texturing. I wrote tutorial titled Introduction To Unwrap UVW in 3ds Max. In that tutorial, I explained how to use Unwrap UVW to texture a box. But, in that tutorial I assumed we already had a scanned texture. So, Unwrap UVW is used only to match faces with appropriate texture. Now, in this tutorial I will explain 8 steps how to texture an object using Unwrap UVW. You can use these techniques for almost any object needed to be textured, especially if you want to texture a low poly model for games. First, we need an object to be textured. For purpose of this tutorial, we will use simple object. STEP 1: APPLY UNWRAP MODIFIER First, right click object and convert it into Editable Poly. STEP 2: GIVE NAME TO FACES This step can be skipped.

STEP 3: DEFINE EACH FACES TO THEIR PROPER MAPPING TYPE Remember that you gave name to faces in Step 2. STEP 4: MOVE AND SCALE PROJECTED FACES IN EDIT UVW'S WINDOW After you have defined each faces to its proper mapping type, you should look at Edit UVW's window. Vector Rendering in Mental Ray. Ok, you want your rendering in vector format, no problem you can do in 3dsmax 6 or above. Open your model in 3dsmax 6 or above, I choose this sword model. Then Press F10 to open render menu and in Assign Renderer select Mental Ray Renderer. Go to mental ray's Rendering > Render > Renderer menu, and under Camera Effects, enable the Contours switchThen, in the Camera Effects rollout, click on the Shader button in the Contour Output slot and choose Contour PS as the new shader.

Click-drag this slot into an unused sample slot in your Material Editor, and make it an instance. In the Material Editor, just type in your final render path for the vector output, with the Adobe Illustrator .EPS format as the suffix (for example, C:\sword.eps). In another slot of Material Editor select Mental Ray and in Advanced Shaders Rollout select Contour then "Layer Thinner(contour)". In this adjust your line width and color settings. Apply this material to your object. Blow up Stuff! with 3ds Max. 101 Things you didnt know in 3DS Max... 1. James Cutler written this tutorial for Mintviz Diffuse Diffuse This is the actual colour of the surface, reflection and refraction colours can affect the visual appearance of this colour. It is important to understand that no material in the real world is pure white RGB (25,255,255) nor pure black RGB (0,0,0). When creating a white or black material, set the colour values to an off white RGB (245,245,245) / black RGB (2,2,2).

If you render an object that is pure white or pure black you will notice that there is no contrast. The light rays are bouncing all over the place, and not being absorbed. Roughness Can be used to simulate dust on a surface by controlling the way the surface reflects direct light. Reflection Reflect Like diffuse it uses a colour value to determine the reflection strength. By default the reflection colour acts as a filter for the diffuse colour and the stronger the reflection colour the dimmer the diffuse colour.
