After a (way too short feeling) last week with my family and friends, I left Belgium and came back to Casco, Maine. No doubt, feeling too busy to keep up with my blog while catching up with everyone here. After a month back home, yes, I miss Belgium. I miss my family, my friends, my school and my volleyball team. The most rewarding thing about this whole experience is meeting people who have both made me a better person, and taught me a lot about the world around me.
I wouldn't be where I am today without them. And although we're far apart, I know our paths will cross again. Thanks for the support of my blog throughout this whole year. Dank jullie wel, iedereen. I think we should leave our boxes of house, classroom and boardroom and integrate with the natural world of fresh air, sun and terrain, if only for a vacation.
Venturing into the field, the park, even a backyard, nature comes upon you with sight, sound and scent that carries you away from asphalt and brick. It’s not all pleasant, this leaving the box. With the flower comes the wasp. The fox is beautiful, but rabbits will die. I have seen three wild foxes in my lifetime — that’s all, and I have looked. In 1956, the first was along Pompey Creek in Mills County, Texas, on the lease of my step-father.
The second time I saw a wild fox was in 2005 when Brenda and I were sitting out on the back porch. Two years later in 2007, I was standing on the bank of Salt Creek in our oak tree grove when along the dry creek bed the third fox trotted, headed upstream towards the Dooley place on the west side of our ranch. The fox hunts and in the end, rabbits scream and chickens cluck and run. Notes: The Land of Nimbi. The Online Books Page. Even though I am living in the biggest country in the world, most of the time it feels like I’m living in the smallest. I have nothing but fondness for Kazan and all of its people, but sometimes at the end of a long day, I start to feel crowded. Buses brimming with students, men with mustaches and tattooed fingers, and old fat ladies wrapped in fur lumber down narrow streets behind masses of Ladas and old Ford models. Everyone is in a rush to get to where they should have been an hour ago, and no one is getting anywhere. In addition to this physical crowdedness, getting used to a social “crowding” that I have never experienced before has been even more exciting, overwhelming, and sometimes frustrating.
In my experience thus far, Russians are much more straightforward than Americans. If a student is unprepared for class, the teacher will call him or her out on it in front of the other students.
