The World-Changing Ideas Of 2014. Forecasting the future is never easy.

The World-Changing Ideas Of 2014

We were, of course, supposed to have flying cars by now--and yet here we all are, still stuck in traffic on the ground. But lack of personal aerial-transportation options aside, we are living in a world in which the pace of innovation and scientific discovery makes reality seem more and more like science fiction. In the next year, those lines will get even more blurred: Think electronic pills that beam your vitals to your doctor, a drone swooping from the sky to save lives in a disaster, or even a fundamental rethinking of how businesses relate to society.

One thing that's certain: The world will look very different a year from now. We predict that these 12 ideas, currently being shaped in labs, skunk works, and boardrooms around the world, will be some of the most revolutionary, changing how we live, for the better, in 2014 and beyond. We Will (Begin To) Destroy Malaria A Drone Will Save a Life You Will Make 4 Billion New Friends. The new technologies that will change human civilization as we know it - Where are technologies heading in the next 30 years ?

The new technologies that will change human civilization as we know it -

How will they affect our lifestyle and human society ? Most adults alive today grew up without the Internet or mobile phones, let alone smartphones and tablets with voice commands and apps for everything. These new technologies have altered our lifestyle in a way few of us could have imagined a few decades ago. But have we reached the end of the line ? What else could turn up that could make our lives so much more different ? Ray Kurzweil, Google's director of engineering, predicts that by 2029 computer will exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to that of a human, and that by 2045 computers will be a billion times more powerful than all of the human brains on Earth. Let's start with cognitive computing. The X Prize Foundation, chaired by Peter Diamandis, co-founder of Singularity University in the Silicon Valley, manages incentivized competitions to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.

Instrumented Bodies gives music and dance some backbone. For the last three years, a small research team at McGill University has been working with a choreographer, a composer, dancers and musicians on a project named Instrumented Bodies.

Instrumented Bodies gives music and dance some backbone

Three groups of sensor-packed, internally-lit digital music controllers that attach to a dancer's costume have been developed, each capable of wirelessly triggering synthesized music as the performer moves around the stage. Sounds are produced by tapping or stroking transparent Ribs or Visors, or by twisting, turning or moving Spines. Though work on the project continues, the instruments have already been used in a performance piece called Les Gestes which toured Canada and Europe during March and April.

"The use of digital fabrication technologies allowed us to quickly iterate through variations of the prototypes," says Malloch. Construction of the Spines is a little more involved. Source: IDMIL. 12-Year-Old Discovers All U.S. Presidents Are Direct Descendents Of King John Of England

Bush and the other past U.S. presidents have in common? Besides holding the coveted title of commander-in-chief, it appears that all of them but one are cousins. The remarkable discovery was made by 12-year-old BridgeAnne d’Avignon, of Salinas, California, who created a ground-breaking family tree that connected 42 of 43 U.S. presidents to one common, and rather unexpected, ancestor: King John of England. ‘They all have the trait of wanting power,’ d’Avignon told the station WFMY. King John, also known as John ‘Lackland’, is renowned for signing the Magna Carta in 1215, which limited the monarch’s power and helped form the British Parliament. John’s other claim to fame, or infamy, is that he was depicted as the villain in the Robin Hood tales.

The only former commander-in-chief not linked to King John is the eighth president, Martin Van Buren, who had Dutch roots. Source: DailyMail. <Information Governance>
