Linux is tough to talk about in terms of performance, because (1) most distros were meant to run on older hardware, so it's hard to unbiasedly judge their performance in terms of age, and (2) the Linux population is a very specific kind, and they tend to have very different ideas of performance, as well as use practices, than the average Windows or OS X user.
