Finally: The Value of Content Strategy Defined

It seems hard to measure, because content has both immediate and long-term, tangible and intangible effects on a business. How do you know if it’s worth the investment? Luckily, one of my favorite Confab 2012 presentations last week by Melissa Rach addressed just this issue. Her presentation on the economics of content strategy is here. Essentially, she broke it down like this: Value = Benefits – Costs That’s the formula: value = benefits - costs. If you’re in a professional industry, one new client might mean an additional $10,000 – $100,000 or more over the course of a year. Other measurable monetary benefits to your organization might include: Faster speed to purchaseMore self-selecting traffic and customersIncreased repeat visits, clicks, and/or purchasesIncreased word of mouthDecreased new content costs via repurposing and structuringAdditional signupsIncreased time spent on site Multiply by Certainty Related Articles.

GIS - Not Just for Programmers or Tech Savvy. Everyday there seems to be a new technology and new service that is being tested out.

GIS - Not Just for Programmers or Tech Savvy

Many times, they involve geo-locational services as well, and running behind the scenes and helping to power the technology is Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is not just for programmers or coders, there are dozens of applications of GIS that can help the non-tech community as well. I remember sitting in a presentation early this year watching an ESRI Demo, and nearly instantly, the presenter was able to create a report identifying the best spot to place windmills in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Boston. The service allows people to simply check the information they want, and ESRI takes care of the rest. This example is one of many showing the impact of using GIS for improved decision making. I recently read a report from ESRI, Maps Improve Gov 2.0, which was an interesting read highlighting how multifaceted GIS is, and how deep the impact of GIS technology has been within government.

Iron Sky Concept Art by Jussi Lehtiniemi. Concept artist and illustrator Jussi Lehtiniemi has posted some great concept art he created for Iron Sky.

Iron Sky Concept Art by Jussi Lehtiniemi

Jussi joined the production in 2007 when he was commissioned to do concept art for the first teaser. In 2008 he started working fulltime on the film. He worked in creating many of the environments, vehicles and structures that appeared in the film. Iron Sky is a dark science fiction comedy directed by Timo Vuorensola and will feature musical score composed by Laibach. The film is produced by Blind Spot Pictures and Energia Productions in Finland, and co-produced by 27 Films in Germany and New Holland Pictures in Australia. Egyptian Teenager Creates Next Generation Quantum Space Propulsion System. An Egyptain teenager has patented a next-generation propulsion system that could send spacecraft to other solar systems—without using a single drop of fuel.

Egyptian Teenager Creates Next Generation Quantum Space Propulsion System

While it is not quite warp-drive technology, young physicist Aisha Mustafa’s system is based on quantum physics and could see mankind boldly go where no man has gone before. The 19-year-old is further proof that young minds produce fresh new ideas. Her propulsion system gets rid of traditional rocket boosters in favor of a more futuristic concept. For those of you who aren’t up to scratch on quantum physics, Mustafa’s idea works on the principle that space is not a vacuum.

Instead, it is filled with a roiling sea of particles and anti-matter particles that are created and then destroy themselves in a blink of an eye. Mustafa believes that this quantum effect can be harnessed via the dynamic Casimir effect. I would not be surprised to see more of Aisha Mustafa in the near future. Via Fast Company / HumanIPO. Physicist Richard Feynman’s science lesson for entrepreneurs: Challenge authority. “If it disagrees with experiment, it is wrong!”

Physicist Richard Feynman’s science lesson for entrepreneurs: Challenge authority.

Roars Richard Feynman in a video recently dusted off by NPR. The clip, on the foundations of science, is only 63 seconds — but its power is clear. Feynman’s lesson is quietly anti-authoritarian, and it should be near the heart of anyone interested in radical social entrepreneurship. Publishing 2.0. How will native advertising scale?

Publishing 2.0

That’s the question on the mind of every brand advertiser, ad agency, and publisher. Native advertising has emerged as a great hope for the future of advertising, to capture the billions of brand ad dollars expected to shift from TV, where mass audiences are finally collapsing, and from online display advertising, where already rock bottom prices, consumer attention, and effectiveness continue to plummet. Native advertising is also a great hope for monetizing mobile, where display ads aren’t just dying but DOA and digital dimes have turned into pennies at best. The hope for native advertising is based on its potential to create immense value for everyone involved: Value for Consumers At its best, native advertising gives consumers content that is genuinely interesting, engaging, and useful. Native advertising truly is NATIVE when consumers can value the content the same way they value editorial content.
