Today, British civil aviation authorities ordered the country's airspace closed as of noon, due to a cloud of ash drifting from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. The volcano has erupted for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, shooting smoke and steam into the air and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters. The volcanic ash has forced the cancellation of many flights and disrupted air traffic across northern Europe, stranding thousands of passengers.
As ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano continued to keep European airspace shut down over the weekend, affecting millions of travelers around the world, some government agencies and airlines clashed over the flight bans. Some restricted airspace is now beginning to open up and some limited flights are being allowed now as airlines are pushing for the ability to judge safety conditions for themselves.

The 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull were volcanic events at Eyjafjöll in Iceland which, although relatively small for volcanic eruptions, caused enormous disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe over an initial period of six days in April 2010.
Today, the skies above my home in England are noticeably empty. The UK air traffic authorities and many others across Europe have closed the airspace due to safety fears from an enormous ash cloud originating from the eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland - around 1000 miles from London.

Il semble par ailleurs qu’un trou dans la calotte du glacier laisse apparaître un nouveau volcan. Le niveau de la rivière Markarfljót est monté d’un mêtre, bloquant 45 personnes à Thorsmork. Le secteur a été évacué dans la nuit, et les premiers signes d’un jokulhaup ont été relevés sur une langue glaciaire au nord de l’Eyjafjallajokul. UPDATE 15h36 : Un jokulhaup est en cours, et un pont sur la Markjaflot a été emporté. Une brèche dans la route n°1 a été aménagée afin de permettre à l’eau de s’évacuer sans emporter les ponts.
