Virtualworlds. Slcc09. No, It's Not Really About the User Interface. I took an instant and visceral dislike to the entries in Dusan Writer's contest to design a new user interface. Well, hey, what's a picnic without ants. It's not just that most of the people are people I just dislike as avatars in SL because I've had to counter them on forums (for example, the Nacon problem is much like the Wagner problem, even a work of genius from that slug will be forever tainted by his horrid, vicious little "dearie" persona on the Herald -- ugh!). Truly, too much is at stake to let this sort of public discussion be yet another arty cliquey FIC thing where the Lindens are overthrown by a small grouplet lobbying for certain geek affectations.

I want people to retain, and they can only retain if they don't encounter modern sleek geeky stuff -- seriously. I truly would like to be at this party and be appreciating people's hard work and all that -- but I don't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a task bar on the bottom. I've struggled to explain this to Lindens. 1. We All Live in a Sea Wolf Yellow Virtual Submarine Second Life | Second Life Update. Spotlight on DML | Public Forum Invitation: join Fanton and Ondrejka on MacArthur Island, May 18.

5.7.09 | MacArthur Foundation President Jonathan Fanton and the co-creator of Second Life, Cory Ondrejka (now at EMI Music), are the featured discussants in a public forum to be held May 18th, 2009. In their conversation, Ondrejka and Fanton will examine the future of virtual worlds and philanthropy. The event continues a two-year investigation into the role of philanthropy in virtual worlds led by the University of Southern California and Global Kids, with support from the MacArthur Foundation. Scheduled for 2pmPT/5pmET, the event is the first to take place on MacArthur Island, a virtual island dedicated to supporting the public good. Located within Second Life, the island features 3D interactive exhibits on issues ranging from biodiversity to human rights and education, and is available to other foundations and nonprofits for events and activities in the public interest.

This public forum will be broadcast as a webcast to standard internet browsers. Virtual Worlds News: Immersive Workspaces Attracting Sky News For Distribution. Sky News announced plans today to shift its strategy in Second Life and begin working with Rivers Run Red 's collaboration tool, Immersive Workspaces . The news agency has been involved with the virtual world for two years. It previously worked with Rivers more for media outreach, simulcasting events into its corporate island. (It's also taken Linden Lab to task for alleged pedophile activity and rebuking the UK government for wasteful spending in Second Life .) Those corporate builds haven't proved too successful overall, so Sky is closing its island and shifting to distribute its news individually.

Rather than using the tools for collaboration, Sky News will be making news pods available for each Immersive Workspace. "Life, even Second Life, and technology, move on. In Second Life, increasingly, the trend has moved away from corporate islands like the Sky Newsroom," blogged Associate Editor, Online, Simon Bucks . I'm not sure how much value that adds, though. .:[THE THIRST: BLOODLINES]:. The Ultimate Second Life Vampire System, from Liquid Designs. New England. Hiking in second life. " The documentary is part of an ongoing project in collaboration with Lawrence Pintak the director of the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism and Research to explore the transformation of the business and culture of journalism in a global context. It was produced in conjunction with Ill Clan Animation studios. It describes a news conference in Second Life organized by DIP and AUC which brought together James K. Irving Wladawsky-Berger: Transforming Business through Virtual Worlds Capabilities – it's Déjà Vu All Over Again. Last week I was in London. One of the main reasons for the trip was to meet with members of the press to discuss our new initiatives focused on the impact of massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) on business, in particular those games that are truly best thought of as virtual worlds or virtual environments, like Second Life. Joining me for the press briefings were some of my colleagues in IBM who are experimenting with these new capabilities. Some were physically with me in London, but most were distributed around the world - in the US, India, Canada, Australia and the UK - and joined as part of a virtual meeting conducted in Second Life.

For awhile now, I have felt that one of the most exciting areas of innovation is to recast our interactions with computer applications in terms of the humans that use them rather than the machines and software that run them. Many, many aspects of conducting effective meetings in the virtual world remain to be investigated.
