My Facebook Disappearance: End of Story? Good-bye Twitter. Barnes & Noble Plans e-Book Reader. Yes, You Can Have Your Mac and PC, too. I bought my first iMac ten years ago, just after graduating from high school. He was Strawberry and his name was Bob. Sadly he met his demise when he was dropped by the USPS on the way to my college dorm and was never the same again. I did manage to collect insurance, however, and used that to fund the purchase of my first iBook, Rupert I. Yes, I’m sure if you’re a die-hard PC owner you may think the above statement is utter gibberish, and I should probably have myself committed. It’s no secret that Mac users sometimes foster curious relationships with our computers. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But though I spend most of my time on a Mac, I’m not opposed to PCs. As it turns out, my approach to the Mac/PC debate is pretty common.

Geordi’s video-to-brain visor being built at MIT. OK, so it’s going to be some time yet before Geordi LaForge video visors are high-street gadgets, but the underlying technologies are coming to fruition faster than I’d have ever expected. Via grinding.be we discover that a team at MIT have sussed a method for grafting a digital device to the optic nerve, enabling them to pipe electronically generated images direct the brain: The implanted chip, according to the MIT team behind it, features a “microfabricated polyimide stimulating electrode array with sputtered iridium oxide electrodes” which is implanted into the user’s retina by a specially-developed surgical technique.
There are also “secondary power and data receiving coils”.Once the implant is in place, wireless transmissions are made from outside the head. When Google Wave was unveiled at Google I/O back in May, we noted that it was one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever seen. Started as a side project in Google’s Sydney, Australia offices, it had the potential to significantly alter the way online communication was carried out.
And Google was betting big on it. Google’s VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra devoted the entire keynote of day two of I/O to the project, and no less than Google co-founder Sergey Brin showed up to talk about it afterwards. Ambitious as Wave was, there were still some rough edges. We were granted access to the developer’s preview shortly after Google I/O, and it was clear that while the basic frame of all this great promise was there, there were no shortage of bugs to be ironed out.
And that’s exactly what the Wave team has been doing the past four months, developer Lars Rasmussen tells us. To be clear: This is not a public launch. But the key to Wave is interaction, which the team knows. Predict The End of the Traditional Resume Here. Imagine Leadership | By XPLANE & Nitin Nohria. More Investors Pile Into Twitter’s Funding Round, Now Reportedly Close To $100 Million. Twitter is about to raise a boatload of cash. Last week we broke the news that Twitter is raising another round of funding at a $1 billion valuation and that one of the new investors in that round is Insight Venture Partners. Initially, Twitter was trying to raise $50 million, but demand for its shares is so great that it is raising even more. The WSJ is reporting that the round may close as early as later today, and that Twitter may end up raising close to $100 million. In addition to Insight Venture Partners, another new investor is T. Rowe Price. In February, 2009, Twitter raised $35 million at a $250 million valuation. Raising that much cash at a $1 billion valuation should hold it over until it decides to go public or is bought for a ridiculously large sum.

Our Microblogging Lives: Work, Home, Lunch, Sleep? Are our everyday lives really so mundane? Does it all boil down to working, getting home, satisfying the most basic needs such as eating and sleeping, and then repeating the cycle the next day? Well, if we look at what we post on microblogging networks, it looks that way. According to a study conducted by the researchers from Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, Google and Elisa the top 5 most frequent microblogging posts are “working,” “home,” “work,” “lunch,” and “sleeping.” Interestingly enough, the study was conducted on a dataset of 400,000 messages in Jaiku, a now largely forgotten Twitter competitor, acquired by Google in October 2007.
