최고의 실력으로 생각을 훔치는 그는 꿈속에서 다시 꿈속으로, 또다시 꿈속으로 들어간다. 드림머신이라는 기계로 타인의 꿈과 접속한 후 생각에 침투해 정보를 빼내거나 생각을 심기도 한다. 한마디로 생각을 조작하는 인셉션(Inception)의 설정이다. 누군가에게 어떤 생각을 심는 것은 그의 실제 삶을 변화시키는 일이다. 혹은 현실 세계를 바꿔놓을 수도 있다. <인셉션>은 꿈이라는 소재와 공간 배경을 벗기고 보면 아주 단순한 영화이다. 꿈에 대한 해석을 학문으로 체계화시킨 오스트리아의 정신분석학자 프로이트는 꿈 연구를 가리켜 ‘무의식으로 가는 왕도’라고 표현했다. 꿈은 달리 말해 이성적 의지와 무의식적 소망의 갈등과의 타협이며, 무의식적 소망을 대리 충족시킴으로써 갈등을 완화시킨다.
