What makes this 1:1 program unique, however, is that students are encouraged to buy their own laptops. How It WorksThe district laptop - available through a local reseller - includes extra RAM, an extended battery, a three-year accident-protection plan, a loaner laptop (if necessary), Microsoft Office Professional, and a three-year subscription to anti-virus protection.

Families can buy from another vendor as long as the laptop meets the district’s specifications and they understand that they are responsible for handling any problems. E-readers. How educators think of content curation in the classroom is enough to change their reliance on print textbooks. It might seem daunting, but the availability of quality materials online and the power of tapping into personal learning networks should make it easier.

Here’s how to create a digital textbook and strategies for involving the students in its development in three steps. 1. The world of education changed last month at 2PM EST on December 2, when NASA announced the discovery of bacterial life on Earth that can use Arsenic instead of Phosphorous in the construction of its DNA. This may seem like a very specialized announcement, one whose connection to our K-12 education is not immediately clear, but I think it has consequences well beyond the details of the announcement itself. From December 2nd on, every life-sciences textbook in common use was immediately rendered inaccurate. Until the start of the month, students were taught that the six basic elemental building blocks of life are carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and phosphorous.

The school is well on its way to achieving that goal, and along the way it made some discoveries about what it takes to make a successful transition to e-texts. "We got it going in the right direction," said Rand Spiwak, CEO of eText Consult and Daytona State's recently retired CFO, who led the school's e-text project.

Building Your Own Textbook

But the growing availability of digital content and open educational resources (OER) is giving schools the opportunity to bypass some of the traditional expenses of textbook purchasing. It's also giving teachers the opportunities to build their own textbooks. No doubt the move from print to digital content is shaking up the entire publishing industry. But the opportunity to shake up and rethink textbooks seems particularly profound.

When you digitize other types of books -- novels, for example -- you (probably) want to retain the layout and the chronology of the original print version. You can also include in a digital textbook (or "course packet" or whatever we'd call this new collection of materials) just those resources that students are actually assigned to work through.
