You can use it for specific parts or create entire automaton with it! If you are going to use brass, probably the first thing you’ll want to do is cut some. The Circus – Final Project Proposal. Our final project proposal for Dustyn’s class is a mechanical circus, inspired by Alexander Calder’s wire circus performance at the Whitney Museum and our love for automatons.
It is also a narrative piece; as our main character advances along a circus ring, other characters come to life to perform their tricks and stunts. The track along which our character travels is a timing belt mechanism with six masonite pulleys and one high-torque DC motor running on 12V. We made our own timing belt pulleys by altering this CAD file to fit the trapezoidal teeth of our timing belt, which we got from McMaster-Carr. We cut 1/8 inch MDF board on ITP’s laser cutter, stacked about 5 of these masonite cogs per pulley, and then added slightly larger tops to prevent the belt from sliding. Mechanics Alive!
