But most people are still being pushed down the assembly line o kindergarten through college without access to alternatives that might be not just cheaper or aster but smarter and better. That’s what the DIY communities help each other get the knowledge and tools they need to solve problems and accom- plish goals on their own without being told how to act or being orced to spend a lot o money.

Reconciling Attention Scarcity with Cognitive Surplus | OnTheSpiral
Last week I wrote about attention scarcity , arguing that institutions and particularly brand will face an uphill battle in the attention market. I realized after the fact that I never defined a specific notion of attention scarcity, and that oversight was particularly glaring in light of the fact that other popular buzzwords seem to directly contradict the notion of attention scarcity. The most obvious of these is Cognitive Surplus . Attention scarcity would seem to posit that people generally have a shortage of attention, yet cognitive surplus suggests there exists a vast reservoir of attention waiting to be redirected towards crowdsourcing platforms and other user generated content. Introduction Knowledge Management (KM) deals with creating and exchanging knowledge within groups of persons in organisational contexts. The potentials and needs of the individual is often not in the focus of KM efforts, although no-one would deny that the individual as knowledge bearer, -user and -creator is naturally the most essential part of knowledge management. I like the theme for this year’s Davos Annual Meeting – Shared Norms for the New Reality. I like the way it is characterized as the challenge of navigating complexity while experiencing an apparent reduction of shared values and principles. I like all of this because in describing it as one of the foremost concerns of many leaders today, the Forum is describing a classic design problem. As a designer I ply my craft in the turbulent waters between the complex things we create and the human beings they are intended to serve.
