Cybermethodology is a newly emergent field that focuses on the creative development and use of computational and technological research methodologies for the analysis of next-generation data sources such as the Internet. The first formal academic program in Cybermethodology[1] is being developed by the University of California, Los Angeles. Background[edit] Cybermethodology is an outgrowth of two relatively new academic fields. The first is Technology and society. This field focuses on the impact of research and innovation on society, and related policy issues.[2] Many universities, including Berkeley, Cornell, MIT and Stanford offer degrees and/or programs of study in this and related fields.

The second field closely integrated with Cybermethodology is Internet studies. Recently, I've been part of a university team involved with the evaluation of a couple of open source Learning Management Systems (LMS) to replace our old version of BlackBoard (Bb) and a home grown LMS.In the course of our investigations we found in favour of Moodle, a very popular LMS that has a wide variety of implementations that range from the world's largest open and distance education university (Open University) to small organisations and single teacher use in schools.While the academic staff in the evaluation overwhelmingly supported the selection of Moodle, the Information Technology department did not.

Their main objections were structured around the language the LMS was written in (PHP) and the need to integrate this language into the oracle database architecture the department has decided on for its long term strategic direction. I’ve been trying to make sense of the data, especially in relation to other reports that have just come out like the BECTA report on web 2.0 in UK schools I wrote about yesterday, and the Technorati survey of the blogosphere from a few weeks ago, which suggested that there were a significant number of older bloggers, with more than 50% of those in the USA and Europe over 35.

All these reports make significant issues of the age issue, and made me question who is driving e learning 2.0, younger workers coming into industry with facebook accounts or older e learning specialists who have been using email and macs since before many of these digital natives were born?? So this got me thinking, who is driving the adoption of e learning 2.0? Don Tapscott: The Impending Demise of the University. Last week I wrote a substantial essay for the Edge arguing that the universities are entering a period of crisis. I argued that is a widening gap between the model of learning offered by many big universities and the natural way that young people who have grown up digital best learn. The reaction on Twitter, mainly from students has been enormously positive.
