Bridge to Learning - Educational Research. The second in my ‘Rethinking’ series of blog posts. This one – Rethinking e-portfolios’ is the notes for a forthcoming book chapter which I will post on the Wales wide Web when completed.. Several years ago, e-portfolios were the vogue in e-learning research and development circles. Yet today little is heard of them. Why? This is not an unimportant question. First of all it is important to note that there was never a single understanding or approach to the development and purpose of an e-Portfolio. In a paper presented at the e-Portfolio conference in Cambridge in 2005 (Attwell, 2005), I attempted to distinguish between the different process in e-Portfolio development and then examined the issue of ownership for each of these processes.

The diagramme reveals not only ownership issues, but possibly contradictory purposes for an e-Portfolio. These are essentially pedagogic issues. Lets look at another, and contrasting, e-Portfolio application, ELGG. These range from academic achievements to athletic accomplishments of school teams. Tanner Spencer from Craik, SK, attended team Canada's World Junior top 35 camp in Orlando, Florida from October 5th to October 15th. As soon as I read it I realize they had violated our district policy which states we will never publish a photo of a student with a full name.

As we explore the idea of a digital footprint and identity we must consider that at some point we want to our students to own their work and accomplishments and showcase them to a variety of audiences. It is in Tanner's very best interest, at this point, that everybody knows is name. And here's the point that is critical. And then there is the rest. I get pretty zealous over stuff like this and perhaps I've missed something here. 2¢ Worth » The Next Killer App? Listen 2009 was the year that my 4th of July lasted for 42 hours, at least that’s the best I could calculate it at the end of the day. Much of the day was in Auckland, New Zealand, then the flight to San Francisco, a four hour layover, and then five more hours across North America. A bit ragged this morning. I’ve been been reflecting, though, about my NECC experience — especially the conversations at the Leadership Symposium and a couple of the conversations I had at the EduBloggerCon.

The idea is starting to jell in my mind that the next big… Hmmmm! As I wrote yesterday, it seems that everytime we sit down and talk about education reform, there seems to be something in the way, preventing us from what we want to do right now. We can’t move that tile in the puzzle, until the one next to it is out of the way, which we can’t move until another one has been shifted, etc. etc. So what might spark the change. Here are a few features that would excite me: It won’t be just a digital folder. ePortfolio - SF State. E-portfolios for real | unexpected ed adventures. I was in a session about e-portfolios and standards the other day run by Allison Miller & Owen O’Neill. While listening I kept wondering how much e-portfolios will materialise in education and was experiencing considerable difficulties understanding what they are.

I’d heard they were a solution in search of a problem and am also aware they are re-emerging as a training issue. Allison was articulate (and smart) in her talking about e-portfolios as a concept rather than a particular application – however I wonder if something keeps being reduced to a concept if it will become tangible. And can you apply standards to a concept? Going back to the old days – what did people do before they had a Resume? Presumably people got jobs because of their relatedness to people and or places – with skills being only part of the consideration.

Sometimes we can still get a job this way but the Resume has stepped in to cross the gap of modern disconnectedness, and to convey a description of our skills. The P in PLE. Contentions are the by-product of dualistic thinking: "I can't be both" and "there's no two ways about it". Resolutions are the result of holistic thinking: "It takes both" and "They are two sides of one coin".

Personal learning environments are not a contentious issue, but the dichotomous thinking about them is. Every positional stance looks valuable, reasonable and insightful to me. What do I know? We all appear to be on guard against pointless learning environments. Professional learning environments are possible in enterprises that are flat with delegated authority, expansive with distributed power to solve problems and thin with imposed controls. Personal learning environments belong outside the firewall. Paradoxical learning environments defy dualistic thinking. Versions of my Online Portfolios. By Dr. Helen C. Electronic Portfolios: What Are They And How Can They Benefit Learning Experiences? Electronic portfolios (also referred to as eportfolios or webfolios) are gaining recognition as a valuable tool for learners, instructors, and academic organizations. Photo credit: Johanna Goodyear, Stephen Coburn Bold proclamations laud webfolios as "higher education's new got-to-have-it tool, the show-and-tell platform of the millennium", and as a tool that "may have the most significant effect on education since the introduction of formal schooling".

Laying aside new-technology hype and enthusiasm, eportfolios can best be viewed as a reactionary response to fundamental shifts in learning, teaching, technology, and learner needs in a climate where learning is no longer perceived as confined to formal education. Portfolios have long been the showcase tools of artists' expressions of competencies and work completed. Eportfolios and webfolios are digital enactments of portfolios. Watching a recent vendor presentation I thought “I can’t believe this is happening again.” That single phrase. In a loop. In my head. Because remember — this happened once before.

The LMS vendors came in with an assessment and management tool, and told us it was an elearning solution. And so Blackboard, an assessment and management tool, determined the pedagogy of colleges for eight or so years. When it wasn’t. How do we avoid it again? There’s only one way — loosely coupled assessment. If we are going to talk assessment, we are going to have to segregate it.

We don’t need to talk more about student needs wth vendors that supply assessment tools. Literally: it is not their business. In fact, we should remove student needs entirely from the equation. The students know they can get far bettter solutions to their problems for free elsewhere. Anything else is insanity. Like this: Like Loading... ePortfolio Maastricht — EIfEL Events.
