Sajay Samuel met Ivan Illich as a student at Penn State, and spent the next decade as part of the group of itinerant scholars who lived and travelled with Illich. In this conversation, we explore the increasing relevance of Illich's understanding of "the vernacular" - the realm of activity which lies outside of the production and consumption of commodities - in the light of today's economic and ecological crises. A written dialogue, based on this conversation, will be produced at some time in 2011 or 2012.
