Surrounded by wheat fields on a high-altitude plateau stand a small glass house and a solid, traditional barn. The owners, inspired by Philip Johnson’s Glass House, wanted a refuge that opens up to the prairie and mountains. The structures are conveniently close to each other and enjoy a sense of isolation at the end of a long country road. Three sides of the house consist of high-efficiency glass framed with steel; on the north is a solid exterior wall. This house for a family was built next to a secluded lagoon in England. Platform 5 Architects have designed this new family home in Norfolk, England, that replaced an outdated bungalow.
The home, which has pitched roofs and a separate boat shed, sits beside a secluded lagoon and is also rented out for vacation rentals through Backwater (also the name of the house). Upon approaching the house, the boat shed is to the left and the main shingle-clad house is to the right. Planters surround the ramp and stairs leading to the front door. Inside, the entry hallway is home to a black, white and wood spiral staircase. A large sliding barn door guides you to the main living area. Summerhouse T / Krupinski/Krupinska Arkitekter. Renée del Gaudio builds Colorado home on land devastated by forest fire. A devastating forest fire cleared the land that this weathering steel-clad house by Colorado architect Renée del Gaudio was built on (+ slideshow).
The property – known as Sunshine Canyon House – is located near the city of Boulder on a 4.5-acre (1.82 hectares) site. Previously, the area was densely wooded, but the landscape was radically changed by the fire in 2010. "When the ash had settled, what remained were granite outcrops, steep slopes, and newly revealed vistas," according to the architect. "The barren site resembled the treeless landscape of Boulder at the turn of the century". Del Gaudio took this natural disaster as an opportunity to rebuild according to Colorado's vernacular architecture. "Rediscovering the architectural language of that era, particularly the region's mining and agricultural heritage, provided the necessary design inspiration," she explained. The home is made up of two different-shaped volumes stacked on top of each other. Photography is by David Lauer. Life House / John Pawson. John Pawson's Life House is built from dark and light bricks. London designer John Pawson has completed the seventh property in Alain de Botton's Living Architecture series: a Welsh valley retreat with a dark skin and a pale interior (+ slideshow).
The British designer took cues from both Japanese houses and Benedictine monasteries with his design for Life House, a 260-square-metre property intended to "immerse the visitor in a zone of extreme calm". Its features include a dark, peaceful chamber buried into the hillside, a contemplation space facing the Welsh mountains, and a room dedicated to bathing. "In this house I wanted to create a modern, secular retreat, where guests can experience the benefits of introspection, solitude and immersion in nature," explained Pawson, who is famed for his minimal style of architecture. Life House – or Tyˆ Bywyd, as it is called in Welsh – is located on the lower slopes of a valley near Llandrindod Wells. It is the first Welsh property in Living Architecture's portfolio of holiday homes.

Threefold Architects completes light-filled London home. Glass walls and a generous light-filled atrium offer plentiful views of the surrounding garden and sky for residents of this north London house by Threefold Architects (+ slideshow). Located at the end of a terrace in Highgate, the two-storey residence was planned to sit amongst trees, plants and lawns, so the London-based Threefold Architects team allowed this to shape their design. They added floor-to-ceiling glazing at ground level, created juliet balconies on the upper floor, and also arranged the floor plan around a top-lit atrium. This helps to brings light right through the building.
"We sought to create a house where the garden almost flowed though it," explained studio co-founder Jack Hosea. Villa Rastorguyevo / Gikalo Kuptsov Architects. Standard Studio has created a home for a family inside a former teachers' lounge – part of a wider conversion project by Casa Architecten that turned an early-20th-century school in Amsterdam into a series of apartments (+ slideshow). The renovation of the school was commissioned by Ons Dorp – a collective of 10 young families, each between the age of 29 and 35, who grouped together to buy the building and develop it into new apartments.
Dutch firm Casa Architecten developed a unique floor plan for each of the 10 apartments, dependent on each family's needs. Materials and furniture were then selected to suit their individual tastes. Amsterdam-based Standard Studio was then asked to design the interior of this particular apartment for a family of four. 7 Examples Of Windows Designed For Sitting.
