Residential courses can be designed in conjunction with visiting staff to ensure all of your educational needs from Key Stage 2 through to AS/A2 Level are met. The field studies centre is situated in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' and is inside the internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere of Braunton Burrows.

Our fieldwork sites are ideally situated throughout this area to maximise these unrivalled resources. Our programmes can include days investigating the process and landforms on the Heritage Coast of Hartland, the diversity of sand dune ecosystems at Braunton Burrows to studying fluvial processes on Exmoor National park. Malham Tarn is an unusual lime-rich upland lake, set amid a variety of habitats with a range of nationally-scarce species. To the west of the Tarn is an area of fen and raised bog, while the surrounding grassland has areas of limestone pavement and a rich flora. The woodland around Tarn House is also of conservation importance. The Tarn and its associated wetlands and woodlands form a National Nature Reserve. Find out about the centre. The Centres are ideal bases for residential fieldwork in Geography, Geology and Biology. There are nearby sites for river and glacial studies, freshwater, woodland and mountain ecology and many opportunities to investigate the human impact on the landscape and land use through farming, forestry, mining, tourism and conservation. Teachers are welcome to run their own fieldwork courses or work jointly with Centre staff. Other groups have used the Centres for art, creative writing, business and enterprise, technology, practical conservation skills and civil engineering. Most of these groups take advantage of their stay and incorporate outdoor adventurous activities into their programmes.
