Football Training & Conditioning

The foundation of any effective football conditioning program is strength training... Absolute or maximal strength in and of itself is not enough though - not if football players want to reach their full potential. To gain the greatest advantage, gains in maximal strength should be converted into explosive power. Don't confuse the two - there is a crucial difference... Power is a combination of strength and speed. And in football, with all other factors equal, the player with the greater power will come out on top. Of course, maximal strength training still plays a key role in a football training program. What other football-specific elements of fitness are important in becoming the best player you can?

In the 1980's the term sport-specific became very popular as training became a much higher priority for coaches and athletes on the high school level. Looking at each position needs and the overall demand football places on the body has enabled the development of far more superior training methods in the past 20 years. Asking 250 pound and higher weighing lineman to run long distances and jump all over the place is actually counter productive. Run interval sprints of 5, 10, 15 and 20 yards. Jumping rope provides linemen the best method for developing quickness and balance.

For skill position players conditioning becomes more diverse and intricate. For distance training the sprint-glide drill is very effective. 5 Gut Busting Football Conditioning Drills. Back when I played high school football, there was nothing I dreaded more than conditioning drills at the end of practice.

5 Gut Busting Football Conditioning Drills

After three hours of practice in the hot and humid Oklahoma sun, all you wanted to do was take a cold shower and chug Gatorade. But my coaches had other plans. In their spare time they came up with sick and sadistic conditioning drills that they piled on top of regular practice. Designed to increase the endurance and the will of our team, these drills usually consisted of wind sprints and calisthenics. When it’s 102 degrees outside, these drills could be a gut buster.

The funny thing about football conditioning drills is that while I dreaded the lead up to them, after we were done I felt a supreme sense of satisfaction. After my senior year of football, I never thought I would do another conditioning drill again. So I decided to start doing those old conditioning drills.

The Gut Buster I don’t remember the name for this drill, but it was a gut buster. 1. 2. 3.
